North Korea says US ruining mood of detente ahead of summit PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) — With just weeks to go before President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un are expected to hold their first-ever summit, Pyongyang on Sunday criticized what it called ‘‘misleading’’ claims that Trump’s policy of maximum political pressure and sanctions are what drove the North to the negotiating table. The North’s official news agency quoted a Foreign Ministry spokesman warning the claims are a ‘‘dangerous attempt’’ to ruin a budding detente on the Korean Peninsula after Kim’s summit late last month with South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

Trump has credited his “maximum pressure” campaign for drawing North Korea to the table and has vowed to keep sanctions in place until to indicate that they are willing to give up their nuclear weapons, not to mention permanently and verifiably dismantle their nuclear programs,” she said.

The move, coupled with North Korea's promise to soften restrictions on foreign journalists, is the latest sign of goodwill from Pyongyang.

This week, North Korea released three Americans prisoners during a visit to Pyongyang by newly appointed Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Trump greeted the prisoners at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland upon their arrival.

The meeting between Trump and Kim will be the first such encounter between a sitting U.S. president and a North Korean premier in history. The U.S. is expected to press the North give up its nuclear ambitions - a demand that Kim has reportedly indicated he is open to.
