The world ' s largest marine reserve , nearly twice the size of Texas, has been established off the coast of Antarctica this week. New Zealand and the United States put forth the proposal to create this marine protected area, or MPA, in 2011.

While it would still be the largest single MPA in the world , and while many core elements of the original proposal remain unchanged, several figures involved in Antarctic conservation were none The East Antarctica plan, which includes a patchwork of smaller marine reserves , remains virtually unchanged.

The largest marine reserve in the world has come into effect in Antarctica, marking a "watershed" moment in conservation of the high seas.

The newly protected area in the Ross Sea covers 1.55 million square kilometres (600,000 square miles) of what is among the last remaining stretches of ocean to be unharmed by human activity.

Japan detects radio signals pointing to possible N.Korea missile test: source

Japan detects radio signals pointing to possible N.Korea missile test: source Japan has detected radio signals suggesting North Korea may be preparing for another ballistic missile launch, although such signals are not unusual and satellite images did not show fresh activity, a Japanese government source said on Tuesday. After firing missiles at a pace of about two or three a month since April, North Korean missile launches paused in September, after Pyongyang fired a rocket that passed over Japan’s northern Hokkaido island."This is not enough to determine (if a launch is likely soon)," the source told Reuters.

The world ' s largest marine protected area was designated in a historic agreement reached by 24 nations and the European Union on Friday. Two other proposals for marine protected areas in East Antarctic waters and the Weddell Sea are still being discussed by the CCAMLR.

The icy waters are home to penguins, seals, killer whales and mink whales, and are a "last refuge for open-ocean marine life" according to the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition.

They offer a rare window into what marine systems were like "before human exploitation" and are home to a significant proportion of the Antarctic ocean's 10,000 species.
