Members of Britain’s largest union, Unite , have re - elected Len McCluskey as the union’s general secretary for a further five years, it was announced today (Sunday 14 April).

The general secretary of the UK's biggest trade union has been re - elected for another five-year term of office. Len McCluskey received 144,570 votes compared with almost 80,000 for the other candidate, Jerry Hicks. Mr McCluskey , who has been Unite 's general secretary since 2010

Len McCluskey has won the poll to be re-elected as general secretary of Unite, the union has announced.

Mr MCluskey won 59,067 votes in the election, which saw low turnout of only 12.2% among members.

His main rival Gerard Coyne received 53,544 votes, while Ian Allinson came third with 17,143 votes.

Voting ended in the election on Wednesday and counting of the ballots has been underway at the Electoral Reform Society all day.

The contest between Mr McCluskey and Mr Coyne has been bitterly fought, and has been described as a battle for the heart and soul of the Labour party.

Tony Burke, Unite's assistant general secretary, said: "I have fought in many union elections over 40 years - this was the vilest I have ever witnessed".

Unite bankrolls the Labour party with £1.5m a year and Mr McCluskey is a key ally of Jeremy Corbyn. On Thursday Mr Coyne was suspended from his role as Unite's West Midlands Regional Secretary, pending an investigation into "certain issues" according to an email sent to Unite members and staff in the area.
