A 12-year-old boy is among six people arrested after a man was beaten unconscious with metal bars and left with "potentially fatal" injuries.

Several attackers bludgeoned the 29-year-old victim on Chinley Avenue in Moston, Manchester, police said.

He is in a critical condition in hospital after being found in the street with a serious head injury on Saturday night.

The 12-year-old was detained along with two boys aged 14, one aged 15 and one aged 17. A 32-year-old man was also arrested.

Detective chief inspector Andrew Cunliffe said: "This is a serious attack which has left a man with potentially fatal or life-changing injuries.

"We know that an incident occurred on nearby Bluestone Road and this has continued on to Chinley Avenue, where the attack itself took place.

"We now have people in custody in relation to this assault, but that should not prevent witnesses coming forward and telling us what they saw."

British 'Islamic State' suspect held in Turkey .
A Briton suspected of fleeing Syria after spending two years in Islamic State-held territory has been arrested in Turkey. The man is believed to be Stefan Aristidou who has been missing from his home in Enfield since fleeing to Cyprus in April 2015.The 23-year-old is reportedly being held on suspicion of terror offences after surrendering to authorities near the border with Syria.According to The Guardian, Aristidou told police he had travelled to Syria to settle rather than fight.
