The dad of a winning EuroMillions syndicate member died just one hour before the draw.

General Manager of Stakelums Home and Hardware business in Thurles, Joe Connolly, told The Sun: “One of the women only lost her father at 7pm on Wednesday and then the draw was made at 8pm.

“The first thing she said when she heard about the win was: ‘I know he’s looking down on me now.’

“Most of the winners heard about the win last night and then they were told of the bereavement this morning so we don’t want to appear to be celebrating it too much today just out of respect.”

Just a small number made their way to the store yesterday, while many celebrated their prize with family and friends. They are set to scoop over €537,000 each.

Store manager Joe Connolly, 37, told the Irish Mirror of the moment he learned they had hit the jackpot.

He said: “Our financial controller is the man who looks after the payment of the Lotto every week and he checks the numbers.

“He discovered late [on Tuesday] night we had won and he called me.

“But because of the bereavement we held it until Wednesday morning to speak to staff. And pretty much of the 32, 29 or 30 were told this morning.

“Some have over 40 years’ service, some are with us a couple of years, some are in their early 20s and some only joined the syndicate in the last six months.

"So there’s a real mix of staff in terms of an age profile.”

National Lottery headquarters confirmed contact had been made earlier in the day by the winning ticket holder.

Spokeswoman Miriam Donohoe said: “We have procedures to go through. We are making arrangements for the money to be claimed. It takes some days for all of the money from the EuroMillion to land in our account.”

The lucky ticket was sold at Eason’s in Thurles Shopping Centre, who just eight months also sold another slip for a €7.5 million Lotto prize.
