He said: “I challenged him and said, ‘I am not listening to this’.

“I got my daughter and walked out of the church and more or less all of the rest walked out as well.”

The protest took the priest by surprise.

Fr McVeigh said: “I think if I had actually known the reaction I was going to get at the end I would have had different thoughts.

“I had the same words at the 10 o’clock mass and the mass on the previous evening and there wasn’t any kind of negative reaction to it at all.”

He insists that the First Holy Communion, which happened at 11.30am, was the “principal mass of the weekend.”

“It was my last opportunity before Friday as a teacher of the faith.”

Fr McVeigh says he would like to meet with the parents, but this meeting is unlikely.

Keith said: “Me personally, no I wouldn’t meet him.”
