Chainsaw mutilator Kenneth Brunell is understood to have returned home after he went missing – yet he’s still being treated as a missing person.

Officers have yet to confirm but it’s believed his family have said he is safe.

The Dubliner, 32, who was convicted a year ago of dismembering and disposing of the body of gangster Keith Ennis in February 2009, vanished from his home in Ballyfermot, Dublin, late last week.

Despite it being claimed he has since returned home gardai are still continuing to treat it as a missing person’s case as they have not yet seen Brunell, who it’s believed was trying to put his criminal past behind him, in person. On Tuesday gardai issued an appeal calling on anyone who may have seen Brunell to come forward.

In May 2017, he along with two other men, Barry McArdle and Philip County, were cleared of murdering Kinahan-linked drug dealer Ennis but convicted of chopping him up with a chainsaw and dumping his remains.

He walked free from a Dutch court because his time in custody had exceeded his two-year sentence.

Amsterdam Criminal Court heard Ennis believed his life was in danger because former criminal associates in Dublin suspected he tipped off gardai about a big drugs factory.

The court was told the remains of the father of one were fished out of a lake more than a week after he went missing in February 2009.
