An Archdeacon has called on authorities to step up after the “needless and senseless” death of a woman who was sleeping rough.

Reverend David Pierpoint called for talk to turn to action after she was found on the grounds of St Michan’s Church in Dublin's inner city on Saturday, Dublin Live reports.

The 27-year-old had been sleeping in the grounds of the church just off the quays which was known as a safe haven for homeless people.

She was found by members of the public who called gardai to the scene where she was later pronounced dead.

Rev Pierpoint said his thoughts and prayers were with the woman’s family.

It's been confirmed that a second rough sleeper has died in Dublin this week. The Lithuanian man, who was believed to be in his late 30s, was found unresponsive outside the Four Courts on Monday evening at around 8pm. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead .

He added: “I am deeply saddened and shocked by the sad and tragic death of a young woman in the early hours of this morning.

"My thoughts and prayers and those of our entire parish community are with this young woman’s family.

The results of the post mortem are expected to guide the course of the investigation.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardai in the Bridewell are investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a female in the grounds of a church off Church St, Dublin 7 on the 12th May 2018.

"Gardai in the Bridewell were notified by members of the public that the body of a female was in the grounds of the church on Church St at 6am this morning.

"Gardai went to the scene and discovered the body, a doctor was called and pronounced the body dead.

"The area was sealed off and a technical examination of the scene is taking place.

"The body was taken to the city morgue and a post mortem is expected to take place later today.

"Investigations are on going at the moment."
