Although the recruitment drive doesn’t begin until the end of January, he told Sean O’Rourke on RTÉ Radio One: ‘We’ve had more than 1,000 unsolicited applications.’

Refusing to divulge how much the group — that charges up to €24,000-a-year in fees — pays teachers, he defended the ‘eye-catching’ fees of the ‘globally mobile’ institution.

‘There’s only 200 schools on the planet that will offer the curriculum that this school is offering. It will have bespoke collaborations with some of the world’s best universities who’ve helped design the curriculum such as Juilliard and MIT. It’s going to be a ground-breaking exercise.’

Mr Crute said there had been hundreds expressions of interest in places at the school, which will open in September 2018 at the South County business park in Leopardstown.

It will teach the International Baccalaureate curriculum and cater for children from the age of three up to 18, he said, adding that the pupil teacher ratio will be 20:1.

Nord Anglia had meetings with large employers and IDA Ireland as part of its planning for Dublin, and it is believed that they will form the majority of the school population.

Mr Crute said the school will have partnerships with the United Nations, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Juilliard performing arts school in New York.

Joining the Irish team from The Royal School Armagh, he previously served as headmaster since 2002 and has held teaching positions at prestigious schools in Europe and Africa.

Mr Crute, who attended Gordonstoun school where Prince Charles was also educated,  said he hoped the school will help sell Ireland to international companies wanting to relocate.

Nord Anglia was founded in the 1970s by Kevin McNeany, a former teacher from Keady in Co Armagh.

It was bought by Baring Asia Private Equity in 2008 and floated in New York in 2014 after buying the US education company World Class Learning Group for $237 million.

Admissions to the school for September 2018 are open and can be completed by filling in the enquiry form here.
