An investigation is underway into the reported stalking of an Irish-bound passenger jet by a suspected military aircraft over the North Atlantic.

A report has been lodged with the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) over the incident which occurred on November 4 last.

A passenger on board Air Canada flight AC842 from Toronto's Pearson Airport bound for Dublin was shocked at 4am to look out of the window and see a single-engine jet close to the side of the plane.

The Airbus A330 jet, which was packed with almost 300 passengers, was several hours into its flight to Dublin when the incident occurred.

One Irish passenger noted that the other aircraft overtook the larger plane from its port side. It was at the same altitude as the Airbus jet but did not have any navigation lights.

A report has been lodged with the IAA though it is suspected that the air corridor in which the incident occurred is outside Irish jurisdiction and likely within either Canadian or US air traffic control.
