A 21-year-old man climbed a 30-foot -high unipole installed on the Delhi-Saharanpur Road in Loni, Ghaziabad, with hopes of salvaging his broken engagement with a woman in his locality.

Their engagement, police said, was broken a day before and climbing the unipole was his desperate attempt to win the woman back.

The man was rescued after an hour-long standoff.

The police identified the man as Harun from nearby Welcome locality in Delhi and the police termed his act akin to the “ suicide scene enacted by Veeru” in Bollywood blockbuster ‘Sholay’.

Police said after his engagement was called off, one of his relatives had brought him to Loni from where he escaped the car and climbed a nearby unipole.

“He is madly in love with the woman and was adamant that he would marry only her. In order to pressurise her into marriage, he climbed the pole installed on the road opposite Rashid Ali Gate, adjacent to Loni police station. He was brought down after nearly an hour. The incident led to traffic jams as hundreds of onlookers gathered at the spot,” said Srikant Prajapati, circle officer (Loni).

Harun’s rescue was not so simple. When all attempts failed to convince him to come down, several policemen climbed the unipole and tied Harun to a rope to avoid any injuries in case he jumped. He was kicked by the policemen in an effort to make him let go of the advertisement grills. After several such kicks, the man lost his grip and fell straight down where the locals had arranged a huge tarpaulin to break his fall.

As a result of the rescue operation, the major road in Loni witnessed a massive jam as hundreds gathered on the road to capture the standoff and rescue attempt. The man was later taken to the police station.

“We have not lodged any FIR against him but we will book him under Section 151 CrPC (arrest to prevent the commission of cognizable offences),” Prajapati added.
