Jammu, April 18 -- Tension mounted on several forward villages of Nowshera sector in frontier Rajouri district early Monday morning after Pakistani army initiated 'indiscriminate' firing and targeted several forward civilian areas. In response, the Indian Army too reacted strongly to the 'unprovoked' incident of ceasefire violation.

Unconfirmed ground reports suggested that Indian army inflicted heavy damages on the other side of the Line of Control.

According to official sources, Pakistan Army was trying to provide cover fire to a small group of infiltrators but alert Indian troops prevented their entry inside the Indian territory from across the LoC.

Tension gripped the highway town of Bannihal in Ramban district where the deaths occurred after a road accident on Wednesday.

Continuous exchange of heavy firing triggered unrest among villagers across forward areas of Kalsian, Lam, Jhanger and Baba Khori.

As a precautionary measure, the district administration ordered closure of educational institutions to prevent any loss of life. Local villagers in the area claimed that Pakistan Army was shelling their forward villages since morning using long range mortars. The villagers remained huddled inside their houses and avoided unwanted movement. The villagers were in touch with local police and civil authorities to organise safe evacuation in the event of fresh flare up of tensions in the area.

SSP Rajouri Suleman Choudhary told reporters, "We are keeping a close watch on the security situation in the forward villages. He said we are in touch with the local villagers through former sarpanches and in case they require any assistance during safe evacuation we will ensure their safety and security. He said the district authorities had already identified certain locations in need of some emergency evacuation.

Defence PRO Lt-Col Munish Mehta said, "The firing from the Pak side started around 8.00 am and continued intermittently for several hours. He said the Indian army posts retaliated 'strongly' and 'effectively'. Pak Army had earlier violated ceasefire agreement in Nowshera on April 8, 2017.

Following latest assessment of the various intelligence agencies, the jawans of the Indian Army have been maintaining high alert in the forward areas to foil any fresh infiltration bid and BAT attack on the forward Indian army posts.
