Filing up of vacancies in state police departments will be monitored by the Supreme Court, Chief Justice JS Khehar said here on Monday after noticing that states had failed to take the necessary steps in the matter.

A CJI-led bench asked home secretaries or authorised joint secretaries of six states to be present on April 21.

“We have been persuading you (states) to fill the vacancies since 2013, but you are not doing anything,” the bench said, expressing dismay over the states.

“Why don’t you give the youth some employment?” the bench remarked when the counsel representing the six states failed to satisfy the judges with the progress they have made.

When Tamil Nadu’s lawyer said the government had issued advertisement, the bench said: “Giving advertisements is the first step. You have taken just the first step since 2013.We will endeavour to monitor the filling up of vacancies.”
