A number of flats have been evacuated after police found suspected hazardous material.

North Yorkshire Police said a 100-metre (328ft) cordon has been put around a property in Selby as the emergency services examine the scene.

A spokesman said the discovery was made when a property was searched at Cockret Court, on Cockret Road, after a 60-year-old man was arrested on Friday afternoon on suspicion of racial or religious aggravated harassment and criminal damage.

The force said: “Whilst conducting the search, suspected hazardous material was located at the property and so police and other emergency services have taken the precautionary decision to evacuate the neighbouring flats within a 100-metre cordon.

“Local residents are being supported and temporary shelter is being provided nearby.

“The area is cordoned off and there will be disruption to the surrounding area as emergency services attend the scene.”
