Unai Emery hints at new position for Welbeck

Unai Emery hints at new position for Welbeck Unai Emery has hinted that Danny Welbeck could potentially be deployed in an unfamiliar role this season, left back. The Spaniard revealed that in training on Friday, Welbeck was played at left back and even claimed that his performance was ‘good’. Speaking to The Mirror, Emery said this. “On Friday he worked with us at left-back. His performance was good.” After returning from his extended summer break after the World Cup, speculation was rife that the 27-year-old would be leaving the club, but Emery was impressed by Welbeck’s versatility. However, being versatile won’t be enough for Welbeck as Emery has set him the challenge of producing his best performances in terms of goals and assists, and playing a key part in the high press the former PSG boss demands from his sides. With competition for places in his usual positions in the form of Lacazette, Aubameyang, Mkhitaryan, Ozil and so on, it looks like the Englishman will be used in new roles this season.

Danny Welbeck will not be leaving Arsenal to secure a move to a foreign club, Unai Emery has confirmed.

The summer transfer window slammed shut on Thursday night for Premier League clubs, but teams from abroad are still able to complete the acquisitions of players from English sides should they choose to sell.

Welbeck was one of several Arsenal players who had been touted for an exit from the Emirates this summer, with the likes of Southampton, Everton and Bournemouth having been linked with respective swoops.

However, no move eventually came to fruition, meaning that Welbeck will be playing his football in North London, instead of elsewhere in the Premier League.

Nevertheless, a move to another club in Europe had remained a genuine possibility for Welbeck, whose first-team chances at Arsenal look slim next season.

Arsenal boss Emery has refuted claims that Welbeck will leave, though, insisting that he is going nowhere between now and the end of August.

As quoted by BBC Sport, the Spaniard delivered an update on some members of the Arsenal squad’s future, earmarking them for exits before the European window closes.

Welbeck, though, was not one of the mentioned names, with his future likely to be with the Gunners for the foreseeable future.

“We only have three players – Carl Jenkinson, David Ospina and Joel Campbell, with the possibility to leave.”
