Mariners starting pitcher James Paxton left his start Thursday against the Angels with lower back stiffness.

Paxton left his start after just 2/3 of an inning and three earned runs allowed.

The 29-year-old had an 8-3 record with a 3.70 ERA coming into Thursday's game. While he is the undisputed ace of the Mariners' staff he has had a propensity for giving up big innings this season.

In 20 starts he has allowed three or more runs seven times. In five of those appearances he has allowed at least three runs in an inning.
