An MRI exam Wednesday on Angels right-hander Garrett Richards' elbow confirmed that he has a damaged ulnar collateral ligament, the Orange County Register reported.

Richards, 30, now must decide whether to undergo Tommy John surgery, which typically is successful but has a 14- to 18-month recovery for a player who will be a free agent after this season.

“I’m very disappointed,” GM Billy Eppler said. “I’m disappointed for the rest of the players in that locker room too. I wanted to see him be all right, which he’s shown at times, but he hasn’t been able to do as much as he wanted to. I feel bad for him.”

Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Garrett Richards has been diagnosed with damage to the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, and he'll decide between rest and rehab or undergoing surgery , the team announced.

The elbow problem is only the latest health issue Richards has faced. He had season-ending knee surgery in 2014, started 32 games in 2015 but was diagnosed with a torn UCL in May 2016 and opted for non-surgical treatment. He was 100 percent by that October and started 2017 in the starting rotation. However, in his first start he experienced a problem with his biceps that was diagnosed as a nerve issue that cost him most of the season.

He missed three weeks earlier this season with a hamstring problem before exiting Tuesday's start with an anguished look on his face, his velocity having dropped markedly in the outing, the Register noted.

Richards is 5-4 with a 3.66 ERA this season.

Not only is he one of 21 Angels players to go on the disabled list this season, but he also is one of six to be dianosed with damaged UCLs. Four — Keynan Middleton, Blake Wood, JC Ramírez and John Lamb — have undergone Tommy John surgery. Pitcher-DH Shohei Ohtani is trying platelet-rich plasma injections and stem-cell therapy, as Richards did in 2016.

“This is a cross to bear,” Eppler said. “I know Garrett. I know the drive within him. He’ll get through it, whatever he ultimately decides.”
