The Winnipeg Jets and goalie Connor Hellebuyck have agreed to terms on a six-year, $37 million contract, the team announced Thursday.

Hellebuyck, 25, had filed for arbitration last week, but it generally was expected that he and the team would reach an agreement on a long-term deal because he is considered a big part of the Jets' future. The contract — with an average annual value of $6.167 million — cements that status.

Hellebuyck made $2 million last season on a one-year deal and had a record contract year: He was 44-11-9 record with six shutouts, a 2.36 GAA and .924 save percentage in 67 appearances, and, in the process, the Michigan native surpassed Tom Barrasso for the most victories in a single season by an American-born goalie.

He helped the Jets set a franchise record for victories (52) and points (114) and finished second in voting for the Vezina Trophy behind the Predators' Pekka Rinne.
