Croatia match preview v Denmark

Croatia match preview v Denmark Croatia were one of only three teams that won all three group games along with Belgium and Uruguay. They also arguably had the toughest group in the World Cup and managed to produce good performances throughout those three games and maintain consistency. However, they play their first World Cup knockout game since 1998 and many expect them to win against fellow European side Denmark. In their last match against Iceland in Rostov, Croatia had a much changed team with only Modric and Perisic retaining their places in the team. Also in that last match the players who particularly impressed were Mateo Kovacic, Milan Badelj and Andrej Kramaric. Those three in particular would have given Dalic a headache after their good performances. There were a few key points and one of them was that, Luka Modric was very on form and one of the stars of the group stages and he benefitted massively from playing in a higher role in central-midfield. Against Nigeria and Argentina he scored and played the game in his own way and with some much freedom. There have a great balance to their side as they defend and attack well and do it equally as good. When they attack they have good numbers that go forward and when defending they have good numbers back which proves how organised and solid and adaptable they are to attacking and defending. Denmark in the group stages proved to be a tough nut to crack and a hard side to break down, so don’t expect Denmark first 60 to 70 minutes to do a lot of attacking but definetly more defending and more frustration and what for their moment to pounce if Croatia make errors. As they have done in their frist two games they have intended to attack and that will be the case tomorrow.

When Rap Genius sat down with Ras Kass, we asked him how this track came together and why he felt compelled to create such an unorthodox song. Find out about the story and motivation behind “Nature of The Threat ” here.

Former Zagreb chief executive Zdravko Mamic also worked as an agent and he was found guilty of siphoning off funds from the sale of stars such as Modric and Dejan Lovren.

The players' reputations have suffered because of the perception that they tried to protect Mamic in statements they made during the saga; Modric was charged with perjury.

Russia v Croatia: Match Preview

Russia v Croatia: Match Preview Host nation Russia are bidding to reach their first World Cup semi-final since 1966 when they take on Croatia in the last quarter-final of 2018. Both sides will know whether they would be facing either England or Sweden in a semi-final clash by the time kick-off arrives in the evening. Russia continued to defy the odds and progressed from the last 16 after a shock result against 2010 World Champions Spain, whom they overcame on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Croatia were nowhere near as inspiring in their match against Denmark compared to their fantastic group stage performances, but they also managed to progress via a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw. Luka Modric had a penalty in extra time saved by Kasper Schmeichel but was amongst the scorers in the shootout as Croatia marched on. They are now looking to reach their first World Cup semi-final since 1998. Both sides will sense a real opportunity here to reach the last four and a close encounter is surely on the cards. Having both won via penalties in the last 16, there will be no fear from either side heading into this fixture no matter how long it may take to separate the two nations. Russia are still set to be major underdogs in this clash but with the home support, they will be looking to take the game to a very clever Croatia outfit and deny them the space to control the game.

On paper there will be a Champions League final rematch in the centre of the park, with Modric to the fore for Croatia and Liverpool's Jordan Henderson holding the fort as the main engine room operator in Gareth Southgate's 3-5-2.

It's not necessarily that straightforward, however, as Modric has taken up a range of positions during this tournament.

Tactical Preview of how England v Croatia will be played out

Tactical Preview of how England v Croatia will be played out England’s story of reaching a World Cup semi-final is quite unique and perhaps, surreal. Their opponents, Croatia, also have a similar fairy-tale to share as both nations get set to lock horns on Wednesday for a place in the final. This is a whole new stage after a considerable amount of time for these two teams. The Croats previously climbed to the last four stage back in 1998, while the Three Lions accomplished it in 1990. Managers Gareth Southgate and Zlatko Dalic like to play football in an attractive and structured way. It will be interesting to see which subtle tweaks they formulate in their respective systems to gain an upper hand in the game. Let us take at the probable lineups of both the teams and also analyse the potential key battles: Firstly, we will take a look at how Croatia can hurt England in certain situations, then discuss the vice-versa to conclude how exactly the scenarios will be played out. The above image shows the expected formations with which both teams will play. The different shapes show where the battles will be played throughout the game. England’s midfield of Jordan Henderson, Dele Alli and Jesse Lingard is predominantly based on pressing high and the latter two making runs across the opposition defence to leave the midfield empty. This can be a dangerous ploy against the likes of Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic.

In spells, Croatia's attacking passing was slow and laboured and they lacked Modric's game-changing ability to lift the tempo and pick out killer passes.

Although it was a high-scoring affair, the hosts effectively concentrated on making themselves difficult to beat.

There were patches during the Russia encounter where he was neutralised from his brief, although his quality still stood out every time he got on the ball.

The clash with England has the potential to suit his strengths if Southgate sticks with the strategy that has brought his side to this point.

For Southgate's preferred XI, the Croatia match is the first time they will meet a team that is stronger in that area.

They may not be as explosive up front, but Dalic has better midfield operators and the key to the Luzhniki encounter will be how England cope with the movement of Modric and Ivan Rakitic.

In the thrashing of Argentina, Rakitic marshalled the defensive midfield area and was instrumental in the stopping of his clubmate Lionel Messi. In the end, both stars ended up on the scoresheet against a ragged opponent.

In the early stages of a congested encounter with Denmark, Rakitic was prominent in the opposition box. However, he dropped off later on, with Modric slightly more advanced as he sent through the killer ball which led to the late penalty that he ultimately missed.

With Modric and Rakitic rotating as deep-lying playmakers, Henderson will need an energetic and disciplined showing from Alli and Lingard - if Southgate opts to stick with that duo - to avoid a situation where he is outnumbered by a team that can patiently work the ball forward.

Alli's wellbeing remains a talking point and England need him at peak fitness to curb the influence of his predecessor at Spurs. Defence has to start from the front.

Croatia are far from a two-man team, though, and talented wideman Ivan Perisic has the ability to ghost into threatening positions.

England's wing-backs have impressed in this tournament, but they face a completely different type of test if there are spells of the match where they don't have the ball.

Granted, these questions were asked before the Colombia match and, even before the unavailability of James was confirmed, the word coming out from those close to the England camp was that Southgate was determined to go for it and play on the front foot.

There is a possibility they will overpower Croatia if they do so; they are the set-piece kings after all and went direct against Sweden when necessary in order to force those opportunities.
