Arsenal keen to land Portugal international this summer

Arsenal keen to land Portugal international this summer Arsenal want to sign Gelson Martins from Sporting CP this summer, according to claims from Portugal. It’s reported by O Jogo, as cited by the Mirror, that the Gunners are contemplating a swoop for the Portugal international as they look to strengthen their attacking ranks. Martins enjoyed another strong season with Sporting and is still being linked with a move to the Premier League. The Gunners were reportedly keen to land Martins in January as they sought out a replacement for Alexis Sanchez. Instead, however, they recruited Henrikh Mkhitaryan in a swap deal with Manchester United for the Chilean. Arsenal’s interest in Martins does not appear to have deterred, though. Although Sporting want to keep hold of their prized asset, it seems Unai Emery’s side will give serious consideration to a bid in the coming weeks. Martins’ contract at Sporting runs until the summer of 2020 and also entails a release clause worth a reported £52.7 million.

Cristiano Ronaldo scores stunning hat-trick in World Cup thriller .
Cristiano Ronaldo scored an outrageous hat-trick as Portugal and Spain shared the spoils in a World Cup classic. Off the back of being handed a whopping €18.8m (£16.4m) fine and a two-year suspended sentence by the Spanish court for tax evasion, Ronaldo put to that bed and rescued his nation a point in what will go down as an all-time classic. It is almost with a hint of irony that the Portuguese captain’s finest hour in a major tournament has come against the very nation that handed him that punishment. Portugal’s Number 7 earned a penalty in just the 4th minute after being tripped by Real Madrid teammate Nacho. Ronaldo took the penalty and scored, sending De Gea the wrong way in the process, to put the European champions 1-0 up early on. The goal was just reward for the bright start made by Portugal and Ronaldo, but Spain rode the early storm and equalised from a well worked finish from Diego Costa. As the game closed into half time, Portugal looked on the back foot but were handed a stroke of luck when De Gea spilled a powerful shot from Ronaldo to put Portugal back in front at the interval. The game looked to be getting away from the European champions in the second half as Spain regrouped and came from 2-1 behind to take the lead 3-2 with goals from Diego Costa and Nacho, redeeming himself for the opening penalty.
