Although Sporting want to keep hold of their prized asset, it seems Unai Emery’s side will give serious consideration to a bid in the coming weeks. Martins’ contract at Sporting runs until the summer of 2020 and also entails a release clause worth a reported £52.7 million.

Liverpool have expressed an interest in signing Gelson Martins, according to a report from Sam Wallace of the Telegraph. Martins is one of the numerous players who cancelled their contracts at Sporting Lisbon earlier this week following the training ground attack from so-called fans at the end of last season. The 23-year-old is currently in Russia as he is part of Russia’s World Cup squad, but he’s likely to be in contact with his agent over his future. Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio, another who cancelled his Sporting contract, has agreed to sign for Wolves, so it looks like the Portuguese management team are happy to let players take some time to resolve any transfer-related issues.
