Liverpool have expressed an interest in signing Stoke City winger Xherdan Shaqiri, according to a report from David Maddock of The Mirror.

The 26-year-old has a clause in his contract that means he can be purchased for just £12m after Stoke’s relegation and Liverpool are apparently interested in bringing him to Anfield.

LIVERPOOL have stepped up their interest in Xherdan Shaqiri by launching a bid for the Bayern Munich star. See today's front and back pages, download the newspaper, order back issues and use the historic Daily Express newspaper archive.

XHERDAN SHAQIRI insists he is not interested in a move to the Premier League from Inter Milan this summer. The Switzerland international is said to be attracting interest from Liverpool and Manchester United, who were both linked with him in the last transfer window.

Everton and Roma are also interested in the former Bayern Munich man, who has scored 15 goals in 92 games for the Potters since his arrival in 2015.

Liverpool are keen to add depth to their attack and see Shaqiri as a good option to have behind their dynamic wide duo of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

Whether Shaqiri is happy to take a back up role will be the key to any deal as he’s be more likely to play regularly elsewhere.

Liverpool make bid to sign Xherdan Shaqiri from Stoke .
Liverpool have triggered the release clause of Stoke City’s Xherdan Shaqiri, according to a local radio station in Stoke. BREAKING: @LFC have triggered the £12.5M release clause for Xherdan Shaqiri from @stokecity. We understand that he will sign a long term contract and complete his medical after the World Cup. #SCFCpic.twitter.com/6gDjqi26bl — The Hitmix 107.5 FM (@thehitmix) June 15, 2018 The Reds have been heavily linked with a swoop for the Swiss international in recent weeks and it seems like they have finally lodged a concrete bid to acquire the winger. Jurgen Klopp has targeted Shaqiri to help add further quality in depth to the attacking ranks at Liverpool, with the winger expected to provide cover for Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane next season. Shaqiri was often criticised for his attitude as Stoke succumbed to relegation last season but the former Bayern Munich and Inter Milan attacker still contributed with eight goals in a bleak campaign for the club. Liverpool will be out to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title next season and to do so, depth will be important. It seems Klopp is looking to add to his squad, along with his starting line-up this summer.
