Dana White admits Conor McGregor craves Floyd Mayweather rematch as UFC star steps up training. But, it is interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson who is leading the race to fight McGregor , with White and the UFC eager for some normality to return to the 155-pound division .

McGregor , 29, reached the summit of the lightweight division in the main event of UFC 205 by registering a second-round TKO For the last few months, White has suggested that McGregor could be relieved of his title if he didn’t provide a suitable timetable for his return to the Octagon.

McGregor drew ire and headlines last month after a rampage ahead of UFC 223 which resulted in criminal charges being brought against the Irishman.

White was scathing in the immediate aftermath of the events, but in recent weeks has appeared more realistic in his assessment of McGregor’s future in the organisation.

Stripped of the 155 lbs belt prior to UFC 223, when discussing the weight class at a recent event, White said:

I’ll admit that, I terrorized him to move to 145. McGregor , of course, was quick on the comeback and called Cerrone “stiff” before declaring the lightweight division to be “stuck in the mud.” White previously hasn’t been eager to allow champions to migrate from division to division , often claiming

“Well let me put it this way: (Tony) Ferguson isn’t going to be back until, probably, October… if everything goes perfect for him after his surgery,”

“Then you’ve got Alvarez-Porier. We’ll see how this thing plays out legally for Conor.”

The kingpin did assert however that the approaching legal process takes prominence in McGregor’s situation:

“Conor has to show up in New York and handle his legal mess.”

“He’s got to be punished by the law first. Let’s see what happens in New York.”

It seems in addition to his felony sentencing, McGregor will also have to answer to the UFC’s powers. Sanctions could be placed upon the fan-favourite that keep him out of the octagon for the foreseeable future.

Premier League clubs showing interest in Callum McGregor

Premier League clubs showing interest in Callum McGregor Callum McGregor has been linked with a move away from Celtic Park this summer with Watford and Bournemouth leading the way for the Scotsman’s signature according to the reports. McGregor has made 52 appearances so far this season for the Scottish champions and has managed to grab himself seven goals. On his way to helping Celtic achieve their seventh league title in a row, McGregor made his international debut for the Scottish first team in 2017 and his consistently good performances since have caught the eye of some Premier League clubs. Watford will be wanting to sign a midfielder as it looks like Abdoulaye Doucoure will be leaving the club this summer, and Bournemouth will be wanting to strengthen their squad once again as they aim to improve again next year and potentially fight for a European spot. McGregor has played all over the park for Celtic this year, mainly in midfield, but has put in good performances in the wide attacking areas as well as at left back when needed. It seems that if any club are wanting to get hold of Brendan Rodgers’ man then they are going to have to pay upwards of £10 million.

Ferguson and Nurmagomedov will fight for the undisputed lightweight strap at UFC 223, but White had so far refused to admit McGregor would be stripped as the champion. He said: ‘Conor understands. Listen, Conor made a lot of money, you know? ‘He wants some time off, but the division has to go on.

UFC President Dana White confirmed that the organization would strip Conor McGregor of the lightweight title if he is not ready to return to Octagon before I love Conor, respect and appreciate everything he did for the organization. I'm talking about this all the time. But the division must move on.

Despite this, a clash with new champion Khabib Nurmagomedov (who allegedly prompted Conor’s trip to New York, following a confrontation with McGregor’s teammate Artem Lobov) may prove to be financially irresistible to White and the UFC.
