Joe Gomez out for the rest of the season and probably the World Cup

Joe Gomez out for the rest of the season and probably the World Cup Joe Gomez will not play again this season, and he’s likely to miss the World Cup too, after undergoing surgery on his injured ankle. The 20-year-old played through the pain during Liverpool’s draws with West Brom and Stoke City and it appears that he wasn’t quite aware of the seveirty of the injury. However, the defender needed surgery to repair the issue and as such, he won’t be part of Liverpool’s squad for the Champions League final in Kiev at the end of May. Gomez was also likely to be included in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad after impressing in his recent appearances, but it looks unlikely that he’ll be fit enough to be part of the 23-man contingent that goes to Russia to represent England. Whilst it was unlikey that Gomez would have started the Champions League final if fit, he would have been named as a substitute, but that will no longer be the case. The news that Gomez will miss the World Cup could open the door for either Trent Alexander-Arnold or Nathaniel Clyne to be called up in his place, although neither offer the defensive versatility that Gomez would have provided to Southgate.

The England manager this week names his squad for Russia and has hinted there will be no major surprises. Gareth Southgate is likely to take Joe Hart to the World Cup as his No 3 goalkeeper and will Gareth Southgate has made the sensible decision to name his World Cup squad early, this

Uncapped Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has won a place in England's 2018 World Cup squad but, as expected, Joe Hart and Jack Wilshere failed to make the cut.

Alexander-Arnold enjoyed a stunning breakthrough season with Liverpool and is in line to start when Jurgen Klopp's men face Real Madrid in next weekend's Champions League final.

An ankle injury to club team-mate Joe Gomez appears to have worked in Alexander-Arnold's favour and he joins Tottenham right-back Kieran Trippier in the squad, with Manchester City's Kyle Walker now seemingly seen primarily as a right-sided centre-back by manager Gareth Southgate.

Chelsea captain Gary Cahill is back in the fold but Hart's poor form during a season-long loan spell at West Ham has cost England's number one at their three previous major tournaments his place.

Burnley's Nick Pope joins Jordan Pickford of Everton and Stoke City's Jack Butland among Southgate's goalkeeping options.

Arsenal playmaker Wilshere largely put persistent injury woes behind him this season to make 38 club appearances in all competitions. However, a knee problem ruled him out of England's March friendlies against Netherlands and Italy and a final chance to impress Southgate, who plumped for Ruben Loftus-Cheek alongside his regular midfielders after the Chelsea youngster impressed on loan at Crystal Palace.

Gunners midfielder set to be excluded from World Cup squad

Gunners midfielder set to be excluded from World Cup squad Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere is set to miss out on selection in England’s World Cup squad, which will be announced on Wednesday, according to the Mirror. Manchester City’s Fabian Delph is set to be named in the 23-man squad instead, as the Gunners midfielder is due to miss out on selection entirely. Delph is yet to feature under England boss Gareth Southgate but offers him a bonus that he can play in more than one position. The City star, who has been playing at left-back this season, has just nine caps for England to his name, with his last outing in 2015. It’s been reported that Southgate called Wilshere on Tuesday morning to relay the news to him. Wilshere was selected for the most recent England squad, but he was forced to pull out through injury and Southgate isn’t prepared to take a chance on the Arsenal man this time out. The 26-year-old must now prepare for next season and get going again for Arsenal to force his way back into contention.
