FRISCO, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Randy Gregory is preparing to apply for reinstatement to the NFL and Jones is hopeful the defensive end can return to the field in 2018.

Suspended Cowboys defensive end Randy Gregory is working through the process required for reinstatement by the NFL and the paperwork could be filed as early as next week, Pro Football Talk reported, citing unidentified sources.

The former second-round pick has been suspended since January 2017 for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, his third suspension since he was a second-round draft pick in 2015.

He has 20 tackles and a sack in 14 games with the Cowboys.

"We’ve got our fingers crossed that he could become the comeback story of 2018,” one of Pro Football Talk's sources said.

Cowboys owner and GM Jerry Jones declined to elaborate on the situation, but, according to, Gregory "has received plenty of help from around the organization and the league in the form of letters of recommendation and votes of confidence."

If Gregory is reinstated and can stay out of off-field trouble, he could bring tantalizing top-tier talent to the Cowboys pass rush.
