Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino was left frustrated after his side let a two-goal led slip against Watford at Vicarage Road this afternoon as reported by the Saints official website.

Saints took the lead in the first half thanks to two strikes from midfielder James Ward-Prowse had given his side a well-deserved lead at the break only for Watford to respond after the interval.

Saints once more failed to build on their advantage and instead held on for what they thought would be a massive three points on for Watford to level up late on.

The Saints boss job is now coming under real pressure and the next win looks like being a long way off despite coming so close to victory in this encounter.

Southampton Player Ratings: Fulham (A)

Southampton Player Ratings: Fulham (A) Southampton progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday afternoon as they defeated Fulham 1-0 at Craven Cottage. The win puts an end to Saints’ treacherous run of games without a victory and the supporters and team alike will hope that the club can now push on and put their awful opening chunk of the season behind them. Mauricio Pellegrino fielded a similar team to the one that was put to the sword by Crystal Palace in midweek. Jan Bednarek came in for the injured Jeremy Pied at right-back, though, while Steven Davis was also drafted in to replace Dusan Tadic. It was a game of genuinely poor quality, with chances being spurned and passes being misplaced throughout. The encounter was not easy on the eye but Saints came out on top after James Ward-Prowse capitalised on a mix-up in the box between a handful of Fulham players in the first-half. Saints were poor on the day, but Fulham were worse. That was the tale of the afternoon for both sides. Here are our Southampton player ratings.

The Saints boss spoke to the media after the draw and was left disappointed by the manner of the Watford leveller against his side.

““You want there to be justice for everyone, but today was an injustice for us,” said the boss.“I thought we played a really good first half. We showed we can be dangerous in open play on the counter-attack, and in defence for most of the game we played well.”

He spoke about his sides difficulty dealing with Watford’s frontline with the moves which they made.

““When you are winning 2-0, you expect your opponent to play very direct and it’s something that’s difficult to defend because maybe they are a little bit better than us in this aspect.“You have to put an extra body in front of the back four, which means you have one less body in front of them.“We did ok – most of the time we did well because I don’t remember many chances for Watford in the second half, just long balls and some crosses.“But we didn’t have the good luck that you need to win.””
