Gaine had previously worked for the Texans from 2014 through 2016, first as director of pro personnel and then as director of player personnel. He went to Buffalo last season to serve as VP of player personnel for the Bills.

John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reported that Gaine is "well-respected by the personnel, coaching and administrative staffs. His familiarity with the organization helped him get the job."

Gaine replaces Rick Smith in the GM role. Smith served 11 seasons in that role, before announcing Dec. 31 he would take an extended leave of absence to care for his wife, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.

O'Brien posted 9-7 records his first three seasons in Houston before injuries last season dropped the team to a 4-12 mark. In December, a report surfaced that O'Brien had issued an ultimatum to team owner Bob McNair, saying he could not work with Smith anymore.
