Liverpool should look to Gremio's Arthur to replace Coutinho

Liverpool should look to Gremio's Arthur to replace Coutinho With the sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona for £142 million confirmed, Liverpool need to reinvest in this transfer window in order to fill the hole he has left in the squad. The £49 million signing of Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez looks increasingly likely but that doesn’t fill the Coutinho void. One man that could is fellow Brazilian Arthur, who currently applies his trade for Gremio. The 21-year-old Brazilian has been linked to Premier League rivals Chelsea and Arsenal as well as Spanish giants Atletico Madrid and Barcelona themselves. His quality is clear to see due to the fact he has drawn interest from teams of this calibre. Arthur has been dubbed as ‘the new Andres Iniesta’ because of his low centre of gravity that both he and the Spaniard possess along with his exceptional passing range and dribbling ability. Capped at under-20 level for his country, Arthur is yet to receive a senior cap but was called up by head coach Tite in October because of his terrific form he showed for Gremio. A move to Liverpool and resulting first-team action could see Arthur secure himself a place in the Brazilian World Cup squad. This signing would be a risk for Liverpool as it may take time for Arthur to settle in England so he may not reach the heights that Coutinho did at his time at Anfield straight away. Gremio are reportedly asking for somewhere in the region of £44 million for the player, a price that could rise with it being well documented that Liverpool are in the market for a Coutinho replacement.

Chelsea are reportedly still keeping tabs on Gremio midfielder Arthur.

The Brazilian has long been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge and it seems the Blues are still keeping track of his progress, according to a report from the Daily Mail.

Gremio hold Arthur in high regard and are keen to retain his services for the foreseeable future. However, with the player having a £45m buyout clause in his contract, the Daily Mail claims, they could be forced into parting company with Arthur if a potential suitors activates this clause.

Arthur has been most strongly linked with a move to Barcelona and was even pictured holding the La Liga leader’s shirt recently having met the club’s sporting director Robert Fernandez.

Although, it seems no deal has been struck yet, which has led to Chelsea’s interest seemingly being firmed up.

Despite Gremio being keen to keep hold of the 21-year-old, they acknowledge that a sizable fee could be too good to turn down for Arthur. The report claims that a sum in the region of £35 million could be enough to sway their decision.

Manchester United are also being linked with a move for the impressive young midfielder, who continues to show signs of quality in his homeland.
