Celtic named as potential suitor for Alfie Mawson

Celtic named as potential suitor for Alfie Mawson Celtic have an interest in Swansea City defender Alfie Mawson, according to reports in Wales. Wales Online claim the 23-year-old is on the ‘list’ of the Parkhead club as well as a number of Premier League teams. It’s thought Brendan Rodgers is looking to add further reinforcements to his defensive options. Mawson has been a mainstay in the Welsh club’s side for most of his Swansea career and has developed into a key figure at the Liberty Stadium. Newly appointed manager Carlos Carvalhal will naturally been keen to keep hold of Mawson, but the Hoops can offer, amongst other things, the lure of Champions League football. Everton, Watford and West Ham are the Premier League clubs supposedly interested in the Englishman. Opinion Mawson has really stepped up to the challenge at Swansea City, impressing many after his move to the club from Barnsley. He’s continually maintained a high level of performance and has developed into one of the best young centre backs in the Premier League. It’s no surprise Celtic are interested, if they indeed are, and you’d think Brendan Rodgers could further develop Mawson into a serious player. The addition of Champions League experience at Parkhead would also undoubtedly benefit him. The only worry may be the fee, which you’d expect to be weighty given his age and rating.

WEST HAM are reportedly close to signing Swansea star Alfie Mawson . ESPN claims David Moyes has made the centre-back a top transfer target for January.

West Ham have been told by Swansea boss Carlos Carvalhal that if they want to land Alfie Mawson this month, they will have to stump up a fee of £50 million.

Carvalhal addressed the media on Thursday ahead of his side’s game at Newcastle this weekend and Mawson was a hot topic.

The Hammers are stated to hold a keen interest in the promising defender, who has been an important for Swansea in the last two seasons. David Moyes is claimed to be an admirer of Mawson’s talents and is keen to bring him to London this month.

Carvalhal, though, has made his stance on the matter abundantly clear, stating that it will take a monumental bid to lure Mawson away. As quoted by Football London, the Swans boss said:

Everton join the race to sign Alfie Mawson

Everton join the race to sign Alfie Mawson Everton are the latest team to express an interest in Swansea City defender Alfie Mawson, as per the Mirror. Sam Allardyce is reportedly ready to spend upwards of £50 million to secure a double deal for both Mawson and Watford’s Abdoulaye Doucoure. West Ham have been heavily linked with a move for Mawson and have reportedly had a bid turned down. With ageing central defenders in the former of Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka, Allardyce is keen to sign another central defender. Mawson has impressed this season in a struggling Swansea side who sit bottom of the Premier League after the festive period. Doucoure, who has impressed for Watford under Marco Silva, has been identified as a cheaper alternative to Steven N’Zonzi, who has been linked with a move to Goodison Park ever since Allardyce took the job. Allardyce has turned Everton’s season around after some early relegation fears but wants to ensure a strong finish.

Leeds United failed to bring Alfie Mawson to Elland Road from Yorkshire rivals Barnsley in 2016 - but now he's set to swap Swansea City for West Ham . And his current price tag just goes to show how far he has come since Leeds United made their move.

“When I signed (as manager last month) it was very clear we would try and bring in players to improve the team. We will not sell the best players in January, the message is clear. I have had guarantees from the chairman, but it depends if someone comes in and gives £50million, £100million, £250million.”

“You can never say that it will not happen, but the fundamental idea is not to sell players and try to improve the team.”

West Ham want to solidify their defence in the January transfer window and Mawson was thought to be one of their prime targets. With a price tag such as this, though, it seems a deal is extremely unlikely.
