Liverpool legend Graeme Souness thinks Paul Pogba's poor "understanding of the game" will ultimately cost him the chance of being one of the best players in the world.

Pogba has been one of Manchester United's standout performers this season with Jose Mourinho's side missing the midfielder when he was sidelined for two months through injury earlier this year.

The France international has scored three goals and provided five assists in just eight Premier League appearances this campaign for the Red Devils.

However, following Pogba's performance in United's 2-1 victory over CSKA Moscow on Tuesday night, Souness was not impressed with the 24-year-old despite providing an assist in the second half.

"When he is on the ball, there’s lots of things to admire," Souness told Irish television channel TV3. "He’s powerful, he’s got good technique, he can wrong foot people, he can ping the ball.

"Where I question him, whether he'll ever be a top player, is his understanding of the game.

"This isn’t me being an ex-Liverpool player caning a Man Utd player. I thought the same when he was a Juventus player.

"That is basic stuff you learn in the youth team.

"He's 24 years old if he's not got it now when is he gonna get it?

"He hasn't taken a big game by the scruff of the neck and dominated it.

"He hasn't got a basic understanding of his position, I can't see that changing."

Mo Salah "has been a revelation" - Phil Thompson .
Former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson has labelled Mohamed Salah a revelation, praising the impact he has had since signing for the Anfield outfit in the summer. Salah came off the bench to net a brace for the Reds’ against Stoke on Wednesday as the club sailed to a comfortable 3-0 victory, earning Jurgen Klopp’s men their seventh league win of the season. Salah’s brace took the Egyptian forward back to being the sole goalscoring chart leader in the Premier League with 12, moving two clear of Tottenham’s Harry Kane. Salah has scored 17 times in all competitions this season. Phil Thompson, who initially doubted the 25-year old’s ability, is now convinced after several dominant displays. Thompson, talking to Premier League Daily, said; “He’s been a revelation. Dare I say, it when we were signing him in the summer I was thinking, ‘I’ve seen this player at Chelsea and he didn’t pull up any trees for Chelsea’.” “He didn’t have many games and I think he scored two goals in about 13 matches and I thought, he didn’t even look a player.” “When he was at Roma, I looked at the stats of the player and thought, ‘it’s not just the goals he scores but the assists that he made.” Thompson compared Salah to Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, another player who failed to make it at Chelsea under Jose Mourinho but flourished in a different European competition, before returning to the Premier League a much stronger player.
