Mexico GP organiser rejects calls by US to move date

Mexico GP organiser rejects calls by US to move date Mexican Formula 1 organisers will not consider moving the grand prix to June to pair it with the Canadian race. US GP promoter Bobby Epstein believes the Mexican race, which immediately follows the Austin round, has been hurting attendance at his own event. He called for the race to be held in June, twinning it with the Canadian race. But Mexican GP organiser Alejandro Soberon claimed a June race would be impossible due to the wet weather in the region at that time of year. “I have a lot of respect for Bobby and what he is doing in Austin, but for us it is impossible to move to June because it is a rainy season,” he said. “We are happy with the date we have. I have a lot of sympathy for him but we cannot move to June. “[The October date] has become a big festival in the city, and overall you cannot have a good experience if the weekend is so rainy.” Soberon did agree it would be good to separate the two races, which have been back to back since Mexico was reintroduced to the calendar in 2015, but believes it would be better for the US to be paired with Canada earlier in the year. The races will be back to back again in 2018.
