Celtic look set to sign QPR defender Steven Caulker, who has worked with Brendan Rodgers previously, on a free transfer.

The 25-year-old Englishman has played for Southampton, Liverpool and Tottenham, and would bring valuable Premier League experience to Celtic having made over 200 career appearances, 123 of which have come in the English top flight.

The Championship side are willing to offload Caulker on a free transfer having paid £8 million for him in 2014, but will look to insert a sell-on clause in the deal with the Hoops according to West London Sport.

Negotiations have been ongoing between both parties and it is understood a deal is close to being agreed for the defender who worked with the Celtic manager at Swansea.

Aberdeen want Mackay-Steven but deal looks unlikely

Aberdeen want Mackay-Steven but deal looks unlikely Aberdeen are working on a deal to sign Gary Mackay-Steven but it looks like they are quite far away from matching Celtic’s asking price. Twitter: Aberdeen keen to sign Gary Mackay-Steven from #Celtic but numbers don’t add up for now. Unlikely as it stands. (@BBCchrismclaug) There has been some talk that Mackay-Steven could go out on loan to the Dons, however, with Ryan Christie already there on a temporary basis, SPFL rules prevent Aberdeen from taking another Celtic player on loan. Mackay-Steven made just 10 appearances last season and with Celtic likely to make more additions this summer, there’s a chance he could feature even less so it could make sense for all parties involved if he was allowed to leave. However, the reigning Scottish champions have no desperate need to sell any player and therefore, unless Aberdeen match Celtic’s asking price, it looks like a deal to take him to Pittodrie will not be completed.

Veteran defender Kolo Toure has joined Scottish champions Celtic on a free transfer after he was released by Liverpool. Rodgers was also interested in signing midfielder Joe Allen from Liverpool, but the Welshman looks set to complete a £13m (m) transfer to Stoke City.

Following the injury to Dedryck Boyata, Caulker could come into the side alongside Jozo Simunovic with Erik Svitachenko’s overall game becoming less suited to Rodgers’ style.

QPR are looking to get Caulker off their wage bill as he is one of the club’s highest earners, and left him in London having gone on their pre-season tour.

Rodgers has already added three players this summer, and may soon add a fourth to bolster his options in defence.

Caulker recently admitted to alcohol and gambling addiction, as well as mental health problems – but could be set for a fresh start north of the border with the chance to play in the Champions League.

Sinclair urges Caulker to make Celtic move this summer .
Scott Sinclair has urged his former Swansea team-mate Steven Caulker to join Celtic this summer. The Mail Online reports that Sinclair believes the defender would be a great addition to the Celtic squad. Speaking about a move for Caulker, Sinclair said the deal would be great business for the Scottish champions. “If Caulks spoke to me, I’d tell him it’s the best place to be. He was terrific that year on loan at Swansea. “It would be amazing for Caulks to sign here. He would be a great signing. The manager knows him well from Swansea. This is a great club to be at for him as well. “I really don’t think there would be a better place for Caulks than to come up here and get his football back on track and enjoying it again.” Reports have linked Celtic with a move for the Queens Park Rangers man, who is widely expected to leave the Championship side this summer. Caulker has been offered the chance to revive his career by Brendan Rodgers, who is said to be helping the defender with his off the pitch problems. The defender has been battling depression as well as alcohol and gambling problems, but Celtic could offer him a fresh start. Rodgers is on the hunt for a new central defender to provide cover for the injured Dedryck Boyata, who could miss up to three months of football through a knee injury.
