  Magnussen: Suspension failure cost me P6 Kevin Magnussen believes he could have put his Haas car on the third row of the grid in Austria but for a suspension failure in Q1. Magnussen and team-mate Romain Grosjean looked strong throughout practice and had set their sights on Q3, but the Dane’s afternoon was cut short after his rear suspension sustained irrecoverable damage in the first part of qualifying. Grosjean went on to qualify in eighth and will start Sunday’s race seventh, promoted by Lewis Hamilton’s grid penalty. A frustrated Magnussen reckons he could have gone one better, pointing out that he has had the edge over the course of the weekend. Asked where he could have qualified without the issue, the 24-year old replied: “Just look at where Romain qualified today. “I’ve been in front of him the whole weekend so in front of him would have been seventh and then Lewis had his penalty so it would have been one place higher. “It is very annoying and frustrating but that is racing sometimes.” Magnussen’s Haas appeared to take a hefty whack on the exit kerbs at Turn 3, but he was quick to refute suggestions that this caused the failure. “I didn’t hit any kerbs,” he said. “I was on the exit kerb of Turn 3 but it doesn’t have those big [yellow kerbs], they are the normal red and white ones.” However, he has been encouraged by the team’s pace this weekend, putting its impressive perform down to progress from engine supplier Ferrari. “I didn’t believe we would be that quick and competitive,” he admitted.

And what happened with Ferrari tyres ? We also had drama with Ferrari hitting tyre problems late in the race on both cars. Hamilton had one of those very special weekends with a stunning qualifying session, pole position and a race, which he was able to completely dominate.

Ferrari and Pirelli are investigating what caused the team's "sudden" and costly tyre blow-outs in the dramatic closing stages of the British GP.

But Sebastian Vettel denied the failures were a consequence of them pushing the limits in their tight title duel with Mercedes.

What had been on course to be second and fourth-place finishes for Ferrari at Silverstone became third and seventh after Kimi Raikkonen and championship leader Vettel suffered front-tyre punctures inside the final three laps.

Pirelli believe the two failures were not the same and aim to get to the bottom of the problems "in the next few days".

However, an ongoing battle with a lack of front grip in the sweltering heat saw him lose touch in the closing stages after several warnings from the front-end. “I was pushing so hard from really early on, it was a really good race and Fores was riding really well,” said Camier. “I think I caught him and was within six tenths of him but I was losing the front so much. “I lost the front once and nearly caught him, I couldn’t quite get him. All in all it was a really good race. “I’m really happy, it’s one of our weakest tracks and we managed to get a good result.” Camier was fully expecting a struggle with grip during the 25-lap race, but found the Pirelli tyres to offer decent grip and, crucially, consistency for the duration. Starting from third for Sunday’s second outing, Camier is happy with the performance of his MV and, save for a few adjustments, will not make any major changes to the bike during the warm-up. “We won’t change much, maybe try and get some performance from a few parts. But I’m happy. “It was to be expected to have low grip, and consistency from the tyres was good; I lapped the whole race within six tenths (of my best laptime), the tyres were working better (than) to be expected. “With the crazy hot temperature it’s normal to have everyone struggle.

After picking his way through the carnage in turn 1, the young Canadian followed his team-mate Felipe Massa into the top ten and stuck close to him throughout the race. “It goes to show anything can happen in a race and it is not over on a Saturday,” Stroll said. “I am feeling very positive as I started 18th, finished 10th and picked up another point. “It wasn’t an easy race, although the start was good and we managed to gain some places. I knew after the start we were in a good position, so it was just a matter of staying focused, not making any mistakes and saving the brakes and tyres towards the end of the race.” The Williams driver was under intense pressure from the Haas of Kevin Magnussen for the first half of the race, the Dane was on Stroll’s tail before his gearbox failed on lap 29. In the latter stages of the race Renault’s Jolyon Palmer was closing in on Stroll, but the 18-year-old managed to keep the gap wide enough to withstand any challenge the Briton could throw at him. Speaking about the challenges he faced, Stroll added: “First, there was Magnussen putting pressure on me and then at the end Palmer, but I just needed to defend as I know around here it is quite difficult to overtake. “We just need to figure out what happened to us this weekend in qualifying and try to cure it for the next race. The next race is Silverstone, the home race for the team, so I am really looking forward to it.

His justifiably celebratory emotions, however, were in stark contrast to the fury expressed by Ferrari ’ s Sebastian Vettel after his right rear tyre exploded at high speed and brought the reliability of Pirelli’s rubber back to centre stage. “Things like that are not allowed to happen .

You'd know this if you followed me on Twitter, because I announced that I took the Ferrari to CarMax for an appraisal. So I'm sitting around the house the other day, and it hits me: I wonder what would happen if I asked them to make me an offer on my Ferrari .

"In the end, we were lucky that we could get back [to the pits] and still see the chequered flag," Vettel told reporters after seeing his title lead over Lewis Hamilton, the race winner, cut to just one point.

"It was very sudden. Obviously once Valtteri [Bottas] passed I dropped the pace and tried to get the car home, turning everything down. For sure we lost a bit of pace because the tyres were going down [in performance] but nothing out of the ordinary. So it was quite sudden when the tyre decided not to take me to the end of the race."

Vettel's soft tyres had been on his car for 30 laps, over half the race distance, but the German says this should not have caused a problem.

"Kimi had something similar with the tyre that was six laps fresher," he said. "For sure the tyres were not brand new. They were on the tyre for 30-odd laps, but from what we predicted in terms of wear it should have been no problem to carry on."

  Raikkonen refutes Marchionne criticism Kimi Raikkonen insists he is giving his all after Ferrari president Sergio Marchionne appeared to question his commitment. Marchionne labelled Raikkonen “a bit of a laggard” ahead of Sunday’s Austrian GP, with the Finn consistently failing to match team-mate Sebastian Vettel. He laboured to fifth place at the Red Bull Ring but, asked about Marchionne’s comments after the race, expressed his confidence that his fortunes will improve. “Obviously I want to do well,” the 2007 world champion said. “My team wants to do well, and I can only do the best that I can. It’s not like I’m not trying. “Unfortunately it’s not been very straightforward sometimes, but that’s part of the plan and we keep pushing and I’m sure things will work out better.” Raikkonen was undercut by Lewis Hamilton after holding off the Mercedes during his first stint and though he showed good pace after pitting, he could not regain the place. “Obviously I was hoping for better,” he admitted. “But I lost a few places at the start then struggled a little bit with the balance in the first part of the first stint. “It was getting better but I never really could recover the good speed on the second set of tyres as I was too far behind. It’s not ideal, but that’s how it is.” Raikkonen is currently fifth in the standings on 83 points, less than half the tally of championship leader Vettel.

Mario Isola, Pirelli's head of car racing, said: "We believe, but it has to be proven, that the two modes of failure of the two tyres were different.

"What we can exclude is carcass failure on Kimi's tyre because the tyre was still inflated. Sebastian had a different issue with a loss of air.

We are working together with the team and the data from the team is a very important part of the investigation. We will look to provide an explanation as soon as possible.

"We cannot say now that it was a problem of wear. But we are not excluding anything. We have to consider everything."

Vettel denied any suggestion Ferrari pushed the tyres further than they should have gone.

"I don't think that had anything to do with today's outcome," he added. "The fact is that the tyre blow-ups came by surprise. It's not like we were gambling and jeopardising our race result.

One theory after the race was that Vettel damaged his tyres in a big lock-up while defending from Bottas in the closing stages before the Mercedes driver eventually got ahead.

However, Isola told reporters: The lock-up was visible but we don't think it was the reason of the failure."

Asked for his opinion, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said: "In high speed with a high load you are working the tyres very hard. And when you push very hard, as Seb did from Valtteri, it just doesn't help the tyre.

"I think we have pushed them to the extreme now in terms of load, speed and pushing hard because of the race circumstances. We didn't have any problems."

Ferrari to field Leclerc in post-Hungary test .
According to reports published by, F2 sensation Charles Leclerc has earned his first opportunity to drive current Ferrari machinery, as he will complete a day behind the wheel of the SF70-H in the post-Hungarian Grand Prix test. Having won the GP3 championship title last season, Leclerc has made a hugely successful graduation to F2 this year. The Monegasque driver currently leads the championship by 67 points, claiming five victories en route. His success as a series rookie is unprecedented in the ‘Pirelli era’ of the category, where experience in the machinery has often proven critical. Despite having driven for Haas in four FP1 sessions last year, this test would be Leclerc’s first opportunity to pilot a current Ferrari. The news has reignited speculation as to where Leclerc will be placed for 2018. Should he proceed to win the F2 championship title, he will not be permitted to remain in the feeder series next season. With Ferrari historically favouring experience over youth when selecting their drivers, it is unlikely that Leclerc would find himself at Ferrari straight after his F2 graduation.
