Hyypia: Reds don't need Van Dijk

Hyypia: Reds don't need Van Dijk Former Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia believes the Reds do not need a new centre-back amid ongoing interest in Virgil van Dijk. Van Dijk looked set to move to Anfield earlier this summer before the deal collapsed when Southampton accused Liverpool of an illegal approach. Whilst a deal is not out of the question, Southampton have since resolved to hold onto their best players. Jurgen Klopp currently has the likes of Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and Ragnar Klavan at his disposal and Hyypia, though he is impressed by Van Dijk, feels a new centre-half is not “essential”. “I think nowadays the centre-backs are a bit different than before, that maybe the modern centre-back, he is very good on the ball, he can play the ball, and maybe sometimes he has difficulties to defend,” the Finn told 5times. “And of course you need to defend in the game, you don’t have the ball all the time. “Van Dijk is a very good player, I like him a lot, I think he has very good qualities in every area of the game, but I don’t know if it’s essential to sign him or to sign a centre back. I’m not sure if we need a centre-back.” If indeed Joe Gomez leaves the club on loan and outcast Mamadou Sakho moves on, more defensive cover may well be necessary. The Reds have also been linked with Lazio’s Stefan de Vrij, Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly and Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah.

Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk has told his club that Liverpool are the only team he wants to sign for this summer, according to Steve Bates of the Mirror. However, the player himself has made it clear that he wants to move to Anfield, thus leaving Southampton in a dilemma.

Virgil van Dijk has told Liverpool that they are his preferred destination this summer. In what represents a major statement of intent from Liverpool and a breakthrough for Klopp, the centre-back has told his suitors and Southampton that he favours a move to Merseyside.

The Reds were forced to make an apology to the Saints after they were accused of tapping up the player and at the time, they ended their interest in him.

They can either keep an unhappy player, something new boss Mauricio Pellegrino is not keen to do, or they can sell him to Liverpool.

Chelsea swoop for defender gives Reds free run at van Dijk

Chelsea swoop for defender gives Reds free run at van Dijk Chelsea have agreed a deal worth £30.7million plus £3.5m in add-ons for Roma central defender Antonio Rudiger, as per Simon Jones and Sami Mokbel of the Mail. The report claims that the German is in discussions with the Premier League Champions after Antonio Conte was left frustrated in his attempts to sign Virgil van Dijk and Leonardo Bonucci. The below video discusses how this affects Liverpool, who remain keen to sign the Southampton and Netherlands star. The Reds escaped any consequences after Southampton complained to the Premier League regarding tapping up, as reported by the Guardian last week. James Pearce from the Echo also wrote that van Dijk has his heart set on a move to Anfield – so there is still potential for the former Celtic man to become Liverpool’s most expensive defensive signing of all time before the transfer window shuts. Jurgen Klopp’s side have been linked with another left-back today, with Mercato365 in France claiming that the Brazilian, Dalbert, is a target. The 23-year-old played 38 times for Nice last season and could replace Alberto Moreno on Merseyside.

Southampton want to keep hold of Virgil van Dijk . Van Dijk has been determined to join Liverpool and, according to Pellegrino, he is no longer in the right frame of mind to be involved with the Southampton first team.

Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk will join Liverpool when the transfer window re-opens on 1 January in a world record £75m deal. The Netherlands international had been expected to join the Reds last summer after he handed in a transfer request.

Simon Mullock of the Mirror also reports that the Reds are willing to go back in for the Dutchman if his “circumstances change”, which basically means if he pushes for the move.

Van Dijk is said to be upset at the thought of missing out on his dream move and is currently deciding whether or not to hand in a transfer request.

Everton remain interested in Virgil van Dijk .
Everton are still interested in signing Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, according to the Daily Star. The 26-year old centre-back’s future has been a large topic of discussion for several months now, with a number of elite clubs said to be interested in his signature. According to the Star, Koeman attempted to sign van Dijk in January although a knee injury scuppered a potential move. Rival club Liverpool have been most heavily linked this summer, although the Reds released a statement in early June declaring an end to the club’s interest in the player, following a tapping-up claim by the South Coast club. With Ramiro Funes Mori now facing an injury lay-off, Koeman may look to further strengthen his backline, having already brought in Michael Keane from Burnley for an initial fee of £25million. Koeman was the man to bring the Netherlands international to England for £13million two years ago from Celtic, and now hopes to reunite with the player who is now regarded as one of the best defenders in the Premier League.
