Celtic beat a number of clubs to land Barry Coffey Celtic have beaten off competition from the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City to sign Irish starlet Barry Coffey, according to a report in national newspaper The Scotsman. Coffey has been on the books of a number of Premier League clubs throughout the last 12 months and his profile grew as he helped Ireland win the Victory Shield in Edinburgh late last year. The 16-year-old playmaker appeared for Chelsea in a youth tournament last year and had been offered trials at both Manchester clubs, but decided against them, instead joining the current Scottish champions. The youngster made a huge impression playing for his home land club Nenagh AFC, and has decided to join Celtic, signing a three-year deal at Celtic Park. Coffey is set to join up with the treble winners’ development squad next month for the upcoming season where he’ll join a squad full of highly promising youngsters.

Celtic have dismissed reports from France that they made a substantial bid for Jean-Kevin Duverne.

The 19-year-old broke into the Lens side at the start of the season and made 40 appearances for the club in Ligue 2 side, catching the eye of a number of clubs along the way.

Celtic were scouting the young defender several months ago, but reports from L’Equipe regarding a £4.8 million bid for Duverne are wide of the mark according to the Glasgow Evening Times.

Duverne, who can play in centre-back or right-back, is contracted with the French side until 2019, and has attracted interest from a number of clubs across Europe.

Brendan Rodgers has a number of options already in the heat of the defence, with first-team players Jozo Simunovic, Dedryck Boyata, Erik Sviatchenko all returning for pre-season training this morning.

Kristoffer Ajer, who spent the remainder of last season on loan at Kilmarnock will also be vying for a first-team role during pre-season in the centre-back position.

New signing Jonny Hayes will also join the squad for the first time at Lennoxtown as they begin preparations for the second round Champions League qualifier next month.

Everton chasing Celtic's Moussa Dembele .
The Liverpool Echo are linking Everton with a shock move for Celtic’s star striker Moussa Dembele, as Romelu Lukaku looks set to leave Goodison Park this summer. Everton are reportedly chasing the French international’s signature after he helped Celtic go unbeaten on their way to the Scottish Premier League title, scoring 32 goals for the club. The Toffees could be set to break their £30million transfer fee record in their bid to sign the striker. However Everton face stern competition from Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool who are also reportedly chasing the 21-year-old’s signature. Former Celtic striker John Hartson believes that Celtic would sell Dembele if they were to receive a tabled bid of around £25million; “I think Celtic will sell Dembele if they get £25million. It’s okay talking about turning it down but when you actually see a bid in black and white and it says £25million then it’s difficult to turn down.” There have been reports that the striker was actually at Finch Farm yesterday, although there are unconfirmed at this stage.
