Nolan Arenado played the starring role in a dramatic win for the Colorado Rockies as they completed a four-game sweep of the San Francisco Giants.

The MLB National League West leaders won 7-5 after Arenado launched a walk-off three-run homer to complete the cycle, having earlier hit a single, an RBI double and a triple.

The victory was necessary to keep the Rockies one game ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Arizona beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4 in 10 innings, Rey Fuentes' homer proving decisive, while the Dodgers held off a late Cincinnati Reds rally to triumph 8-7.

Hernan Perez and Manny Pina went long in the sixth inning as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the San Diego Padres 2-1 to maintain their 2.5-game lead in the NL Central over the Chicago Cubs, whose 7-1 rout of divisional rivals the Pittsburgh Pirates was rounded off by homers from in-form pair Anthony Rizzo and Ian Happ.

The New York Mets beat NL East leaders the Washington Nationals 5-1, Jacob deGrom smashing his first ever home run and pitching eight innings of one-run ball. Brandon Phillips' second walk-off winner in successive games saw the Atlanta Braves past the Miami Marlins 5-4.

The Boston Red Sox drew level with American League East leaders the New York Yankees after two Xander Bogaerts home runs led them to a 6-5 win over the Houston Astros. The Yankees lost 4-3 to the Oakland Athletics, the AL West's basement club producing a shock series sweep thanks to Khris Davis' two-run shot.

The remainder of the AL East enjoyed wins, with the Tampa Bay Rays hammering the Detroit Tigers 9-1, the Baltimore Orioles winning 8-5 against the St Louis Cardinals and the Toronto Blue Jays beating the Chicago White Sox 7-3.

The Cleveland Indians recorded a third victory over the Minnesota Twins in two nights, Edwin Encarnacion with two home runs, an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to account for all his team's runs in a 5-2 success.

The Kansas City Royals beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-3 and the Seattle Mariners won by the same scoreline against the Texas Rangers.

The Mets pitcher scattered just three hits over eight innings while striking out six with two walks. He also helped himself at the plate with a solo homer in the third inning that tied the game at 1-1. The Mets added a pair of runs an inning later thanks to RBI singles by Travis d'Arnaud and Michael Conforto, who added another RBI single in the sixth.
