Lady Gaga's visual director promises 'wow factor' during Coachella set

Lady Gaga's visual director promises 'wow factor' during Coachella set Lady Gaga's visual director has promised her headline set at Coachella will be full of surprises. The Born This Way hitmaker was drafted in to replace Beyonce as the Saturday (15Apr17) headliner at the Californian festival back in February. Beyonce had been scheduled to perform but pulled out after announcing she is expecting twins with husband Jay Z. Gaga is taking her headliner duties seriously, and has been in rehearsals "pretty much every day" since agreeing to play the festival, her long-time choreographer and visual director Richy Jackson revealed. "We had to get in those creative meetings quick, we had to start thinking faster because we don’t have a lot of time to put together a show where she’s headlining Coachella - this was sort of out of nowhere because we all thought Beyonce was going to be doing it," he told Entertainment Weekly. And Jackson revealed that Gaga is "up for anything" for her headline set, but refused to divulge any more information about her highly anticipated performance. "Well, you know, there's always a 'wow' with Gaga at some point That's all I can say," he teased. "There's always something. "For the crowd at Coachella, they are there for so many different reasons, so as far as our show, what I can tell you, it is going to be high energy, we are going to play with some of her various genres she has within her as an artist and figure out a way to allocate those things throughout the show, and take some risks and some chances and have a good time, because we’re out there at Coachella." The 31-year-old singer is the first woman to headline the festival since Bjork in 2007, and will return to the festival next Saturday (22Apr17) for her second headline set at the two weekend festival.

The Carolina Panthers quarterback, who is no stranger to making fashion headlines, explained the thought process behind his festival-going attire in an interview with the Panthers' official website. (Around the 4:11 mark.)

"At the end of the day, I'm at the position where it's not the first time and it won't be the last time," Newton said. "When you're able to have sauce, when you're dripping goo. And for you to not understand that, then you're already out the loop. Everybody can't do it and that's what I pride myself on being able to do. I was comfortable, I had fun and I enjoyed myself."

Coachella turns purple with Prince tributes .
LCD Soundsystem, Ellie Goulding and Joey Bada$$ were among the acts at Coachella Festival who paid tribute to the late music icon Prince. The Brooklyn electro-band were Friday's (22Apr16) headliner, and frontman James Murphy drove the crowd wild with a version of the musician's 1981 hit Controversy. The festival's trademark palm trees, which are usually lit with different colours throughout the weekend, glowed purple on Friday evening, as did the floodlights across the venue at Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. Before LCD Soundsystem took to the stage, three screens on the main stage played Prince's cover of Radiohead's 1993 hit Creep, which he initially debuted during his headline performance at Coachella in 2008. After the screening ended, a quote from the Purple Rain hitmaker appeared on stage - "From now on This is Prince's House." Hip-hop star Joey Bada$$ played some of 1999 during his set, dance duo Jack U finished their set with a montage of Prince moments, and Brit singer Ellie Goulding teased When Doves Cry. Meanwhile, soul singer Mavis Staples moved the crowd to tears earlier on Friday as she recounted a story about meeting Prince for the first time at his Paisley Park label. She then asked for a moment of silence, and then performed an a cappella version of the chorus of Purple Rain. Prince died on Thursday (21Apr16), just one day before the second weekend of Coachella kicked off. Guns N' Roses are due to headline on Saturday (23Apr16), while Calvin Harris will close the festival on Sunday night (24Apr16).
