Vote for your Man of the Match vs Anderlecht

Vote for your Man of the Match vs Anderlecht Manchester United looked to have done the business in their away tie against Anderlecht in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final, but the hosts came up with a late equaliser to make the return leg at Old Trafford next week a bit more interesting. Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored United’s goal with the Red Devils in control of the game, when Marcus Rashford’s excellent volley was expertly saved by Ruben in the Anderlecht goal, only for the Armenian wizard to slot home the rebound. 1-0 up and fairly comfortable, United looked to be heading back to Manchester with a vital away goal and a solid clean sheet – before Leander Dendoncker drilled a header past Sergio Romero with just four minutes left on the clock. It was another case of United not being able to kill a game off, despite playing well – and the second leg promises to be a cracker now.

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney may return to the substitute’s bench for the Reds’ Europa League quarter-final second leg against Anderlecht if he gets through a training session on Wednesday afternoon.

That is according to United boss José Mourinho, who says that the striker is improving after missing the last four games with an ankle problem. At the pre-match press conference, the Portuguese said:

“He’s working now, he’s improving and if in this training session [this afternoon] the answer is positive, I would select him to be on the bench tomorrow.”

“He’s experienced, his know-how of this knockout phase – I think he’s a player that can be useful tomorrow. If we need a goal, he can help us. If we need to keep a result, to keep the ball, to keep control of the game by having possession, he can help us too. So, hopefully his answer in the training session is positive.”

Team News - United vs Chelsea

Team News - United vs Chelsea Manchester United have to put their late disappointment in Belgium on Thursday night behind them as they look to keep up the pace in the race for top four on Sunday afternoon. The Red Devils were 1-0 up and very comfortable against Anderlecht on Thursday night when Leander Dendoncker thumped home a header to equalise late on – but that must be forgotten, at least for now, as United host top of the table Chelsea this weekend. Jose Mourinho’s men have already played Chelsea twice this season – once in the league and once in the FA Cup, both at Stamford Bridge. In the league fixture, Chelsea ran riot and won 4-0 – before edging 10-man United out for a 1-0 victory in the cup. Mourinho and his side will want to avenge those defeats – and really disrupt Chelsea’s push for the title – by beating the Blues on Sunday. United team news Out: Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Juan Mata Maybe: Ashley Young, Wayne Rooney Fit: David de Gea Jose Mourinho confirmed on Friday that Phil Jones and Chris Smalling will not play again this month – and that second top-scorer Juan Mata is out until the end of May – meaning that the Europa League final, should United get there, still may come too soon for the Spaniard. David de Gea is fit to play following his absence last weekend and appearance on the bench at Anderlecht on Thursday. Ashley Young and Wayne Rooney didn’t make the trip in midweek, but could be in contention for a squad place on Sunday afternoon. Chelsea team news Chelsea’s squad is fully fit.

Mourinho also confirmed that Sergio Romero would start ahead of David de Gea in goal for tomorrow’s night clash at Old Trafford, but did not say whether that meant that the Argentine would be first-choice for the rest of United’s European campaign:

“No, he’s not my goalkeeper for the Europa League. He’s my goalkeeper for tomorrow. ”

“He was my goalkeeper in the other matches, but he’s not my goalkeeper for the Europa League. I never like to do that complete separation. I can say the priority for Sergio is to play in the Europa League, yes, but we had some matches where David played.”

“David’s priority is to play in the Premier League but I don’t like the complete separation. I cannot say every match is for one or the other. The reality is that Sergio is very stable, he’s very experienced, he’s playing very well. He played in the Premier League [against Sunderland], he played well. He played in the FA Cup, he played well. He played in the League Cup, he played well.”

United will be looking to seal progress to the Europa League semi-finals in comprehensive fashion, with Leander Dendoncker’s late equaliser giving Anderlecht hope heading into the second leg after the Reds had dominated most of the encounter at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium a week ago.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic out for the rest of the season .
Manchester United have been dealt a major blow to their hopes for the remained of the season with the news that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is set to miss the finals games of the campaign with a knee injury. The striker went down with a knee injury last in the second half of last night’s Europa League quarter-final second-leg victory over Anderlecht where he planted his leg in an awkward position before falling to the deck grasping at the injured knee. The Daily Mail understand the Swede has been ruled out for the rest of the season following the injury, meaning United will miss him in their pursuit of a top four finish as well as their Europa League semi-final clash with Celta Vigo. Ibrahimovic has netted 28 goals in all competitions for United this season following his free transfer move from PSG last summer and we could have seen the last of him at Old Trafford seeing as his contract expires at the end of the season.
