Prema Racing’s Charles Leclerc triumphed in a thrilling Formula 2 sprint race in Bahrain, with a last lap move on Russian Time’s Luca Ghiotto.

Leclerc wrestled his way into the lead in the opening stages and built himself an eight-second lead before pitting onto fresh tyres with nine laps to go, an unorthodox strategy for an F2 sprint race.

The Ferrari junior carved his way through the field with moves at nearly every corner of the track to close up behind DAMS’ Oliver Rowland and Ghiotto on the penultimate lap.

Leclerc passed Rowland on the inside of Turn 1 and then slipped through past the Italian when he ran wide into Turn 4 on the final lap of a breath-taking race.

Leclerc’s soft-tyres gave him far superior grip to the rest of the field and he effortlessly rose from 14th to first, without the slightest contact with another driver.

Ghiotto was forced to settle for second place, his fifth podium in the series. Rowland completed the top three ahead of team-mate Nicholas Latifi, who enjoyed his best result in the championship since the opening race of 2016.

Jordan King ended the race in fifth after struggling with tyre wear in the second half of the race. Nyck de Vries learnt from his feature race mistakes to secure sixth place in the sprint race ahead of Alexander Albon who started the race from the front row.

His team-mate Nobuharu Matsushita was originally scheduled to start on pole position but was forced to start from the pitlane due to mechanical issues. He finished in a lowly 14th place.

Feature race winner Artem Markelov tried another unorthodox strategy as he started on the soft-tyres when the rest of the field began the race on the medium-tyres.

However, it failed to pay off as he finished in eighth despite running in second place before pitting. Johnny Cecotto narrowly missed out on points in ninth place ahead of Antonio Fuoco, who struggled to manage his Pirelli rubber.

Norman Nato, who finished second in the feature race, suffered a puncture which speared him into the gravel and out of the race after he made contact with Rowland at the start of the race on the exit of Turn 4.

Leclerc walks away from Bahrain with an eight-point advantage over Artem Markelov in the drivers’ championship, while Russian Time leads the team’s championship ahead of Prema Racing.
