Verstappen leads Massa in heavily disrupted FP1 in Shanghai

Verstappen leads Massa in heavily disrupted FP1 in Shanghai Max Verstappen topped the timesheets in opening practice for the Chinese Grand Prix in what was a heavily disrupted session. Verstappen made the most of what little running there was on the intermediates to go fastest of anyone. The Red Bull driver ended FP1 1.5s clear of Felipe Massa in second. It took approximately 45 minutes for first practice to get underway due to weather conditions in Shanghai being unsuitable for the medical helicopter to fly and land at the hospital if necessary. Once the session got back underway, there was a limited amount of running on track as the majority of the big hitters sat in the garage. Both Haas drivers struggled in the conditions, spinning on the intermediates. Verstappen’s 1m50.491s stood at the top of the timesheets for the rest of the session after the virtual safety car was deployed due to Nico Hulkenberg binning his Renault at Turn 3. The session was then called off with four minutes to go after conditions had worsened and the helicopter could not fly again.

Max Verstappen says Felipe Massa " ruined " his final lap in Bahrain Grand Prix Formula 1 qualifying by overtaking him into the final corner. The Red Bull driver ended up only sixth on the grid after topping final practice.

Max Verstappen claims Williams Formula 1 driver Felipe Massa ‘ruined’ his qualifying lap for the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Verstappen was fastest in final practice but could only manage sixth in qualifying, over a tenth slower than his Red Bull team-mate Daniel Ricciardo who will line-up fourth in tomorrow’s race.

“Just before I wanted to prepare into the last corner, Felipe dived in front of me then just stopped,” the Dutchman explained.

“There was a big gap behind us, so it was like, ‘why did you do that?’

“I just had to stay in first gear all round the corner to make a gap to him that basically ruined my lap because you have cold tyres, you have a very bad exit out of that last corner and then it’s ruined.

Verstappen: Podium finish was 'unthinkable'

Verstappen: Podium finish was 'unthinkable' Max Verstappen admits a podium finish had never crossed his mind as he fought through the field from a lowly grid position to finish third in China. The Dutch driver was knocked out in the first segment of qualifying after a misfire on his Red Bull, forcing him to start 16th on the grid. Due to the tricky conditions in the opening laps, Verstappen scythed through the pack on intermediate tyres to run seventh by the end of lap one. Despite a late charge from team-mate Daniel Ricciardo in the closing stages, Verstappen held on for an eighth career podium and a first in Shanghai. “It was very challenging, on lap one I passed nine cars so it was not too bad,” he said. “I was very happy with that then [as] after it was a very good race. I didn’t have a lot of track time with the car balance from yesterday because I didn’t do qualifying, so I was basically nursing the car to the finish. “Of course I’m very happy to be on the podium, I didn’t expect that at all, especially starting from 16th.” During the final laps, Verstappen struggled to lap the Haas of Romain Grosjean – which led to a tense finish with Ricciardo for the final podium slot. “I mean I just wanted clear air as I was already struggling a lot with the fronts and that doesn’t help,” the 19-year-old explained. “But at the end we still finished on the podium so I’m very happy.

Max Verstappen said his warm-up procedure for his qualifying lap at the Bahrain Grand Prix was ruined by Felipe Massa diving past him at the final corner. On an evening when Daniel Ricciardo beat Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen to fourth on the grid, Verstappen was

Both Williams were affected by engine software issues, which meant they were unable to run in qualifying mode. With the various penalties applied, the provisional grid currently reads as: Rosberg, Verstappen ; Raikkonen, Vettel; Ricciardo, Perez; Hulkenberg, Bottas; Button, Massa ; Grosjean

“Well he’s a Brazilian – so there’s not much to discuss,” Verstappen added when asked if he would confront Massa.

Although he had a frustrating qualifying session, Verstappen is still hopeful of a good result in the race.

“We are definitely closer, I think Mercedes is still too fast for us but the Ferrari doesn’t look too far ahead,” Verstappen said.

“Our car seems to work much better on this track so hopefully, we will get a clean start with no incidents and then see what we can do in the race.

“It was definitely possible to be a bit further forward but last time I started a bit further behind and ended on the podium so anything is possible.”
