“If he turns up, he’s more than capable of taking the field apart and going on to win it.

“He’s not had the best season. I know he won the Masters but he’s not coming here playing as well as he’d like, but he’s one of the few players capable of flicking a switch and before you know it he’s playing phenomenal snooker, so he’s one to watch out for.

“It’s going to be tough but I’m playing as well as anyone.”

O’Sullivan fondly recalled his 2012 triumph, the fourth of his five World Championship wins, as a key moment in his life.

“I remember having a poor couple of years, with people writing me off, and then I started playing all right again,” said O’Sullivan, 41.

“I played some of the best snooker I've ever played in 2012 and to have my little boy there to share that moment with me was probably the best moment of my life -  not just in Sheffield - because little Ron was here.

“I didn't think I’d win another match at one point, so to win the World again was a bit of a bonus.”

He said: “I don't really put myself under pressure any more. If I get a result, great."
