Puel 'has a lot of respect' for Guardiola

Puel 'has a lot of respect' for Guardiola Ahead of the clash between Southampton and Manchester City on Saturday, Claude Puel was full of high praise for his counterpart Pep Guardiola. This is not the first season that the two tacticians have met. They played against each other in the Champions League round of 16, when Barcelona, managed by Guardiola, faced Lyon, managed by Puel. The course of the two legs saw Barcelona proceed 6-3 on aggregate. In the pre-match press conference yesterday, as quoted by Saints’ official website, Puel waxed lyrical over the Spaniard, as he spoke of how the former Bayern Munich boss added many more different tactics to European football. “I think Pep Guardiola changed all of football and gave more opportunities for trainers to think about their football, like recovering the ball high up the pitch.” “I have a lot of respect for Pep. He has a philosophy of football that I like. I like when the team tries to have possession and to give always the good response on the game, with quality.” The last time these two sides met, a solid performance from the Saints got them an impressive point at the Etihad. You could see the different counteraction of tactics used by the two managers, who provided a great match to watch. Saints will hope to keep up their good form on Saturday and take their third win in as many games.

Southampton host Manchester City at St.Mary’s this weekend as they look to build on their win at The Hawthorns last week.

The Saints have won their last two matches – against Crystal Palace and West Brom – and will aim to make it a hat-trick against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side.

Claude Puel’s men came away from West Brom with a 1-0 win – courtesy of a Jordy Clasie goal – last weekend to move within four points of eighth place. This is with two games in hand over West Brom, albeit against Arsenal and Manchester United.

Guardiola heaps the praise on Southampton

Guardiola heaps the praise on Southampton Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has been full of praise for Southampton ahead of tomorrow’s clash at St Mary’s Stadium. The Spaniard, as quoted by BT Sport, spoke of Saints’ qualities and insisted that his City side cannot afford to underestimate Claude Puel’s men if they are to take anything away from the south coast. “I think Southampton are making an exceptional season. They have, of course, a good manager and exceptional players in all positions. They have very good midfielders, all the strikers are so fast, they play the wingers inside – and all of them have good quality. The full-backs are guys who go up and down.” Guardiola has overseen a somewhat frustrating first season in the Premier League, with his team positioned in fourth place behind Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea. “They are a really, really good team. I was really impressed when they came here at the beginning of the season.” However, he has the tools at his disposal to really hurt Saints tomorrow if his men are fit and firing, with City largely regarded as one of the most exciting, attacking teams in the country right now. “They are a good team. It’s a really good test for us.” When the two sides met at the Etihad Stadium earlier on in the season for the reverse fixture, goals from Nathan Redmond and Kelechi Iheanacho saw the game finish 1-1, with both sides sharing the points. “Of course in that moment we came back from Barcelona, had played a lot of games in that period and we were tired.

Chances are nobody at Southampton could have seen the Saints sitting in front of the Premier League holders after 12 matches, but having climbed to second, the hosts will give their best to remain in top 4 for as long Prediction : Manchester City vs Liverpool. Prediction : Atletico Madrid vs Sevilla.

Match facts. The Saints ’ most recent win against City was back in early 2013 with that 3-1 home encounter, thanks to goals from Puncheon, Davis and an own goal from Barry. Can you predict the score? Southampton . Manchester City .

Manchester City, however, come into the game with the sole purpose of cementing their place in the top four. City are four points ahead of fifth place Manchester United, who have a game in hand – against Southampton – and will want to extend that.

But, back to Southampton, here is how we think the Saints will line-up…

Palace eye summer move for Jay Rodriguez .
Sam Allardyce and Crystal Palace have identified out-of-favour Southampton forward Jay Rodriguez as a possible summer transfer target. As reported by the Mirror this evening, the Eagles are keen to bolster their attacking reinforcements by bringing the out-of-favour Saints forward to Selhurst Park. Rodriguez hasn’t had the best of seasons for Saints so far, struggling yet again with injury problems and failing to really cement a place in Claude Puel’s starting line-up. The one-time England international was due to go out on loan in the summer transfer window but a late equaliser against Sunderland changed Puel’s mind, seeing Rodriguez play at St Mary’s for the season. Palace have endured a difficult season but look to have set themselves far enough away from the relegation zone to secure their Premier League status ahead of the coming season. Sam Allardyce doesn’t have many striking options at his disposal aside from Christian Benteke and the experienced, potentially available option of Rodriguez would be a plausible signing this summer.
