It’s tulip season!

Time to celebrate spring with rows upon rows of brightly colored flowers and pick-your-own festivals. From China to Washington, tulips are a favorite among farmers and tourists.

Netherlands

The Netherlands is known for its flowers. Two-thirds of the world’s cut flowers were produced in the country in 2005, worth $4.2 billion, according to the USDA. Eighty percent of the world’s flower bulbs are raised in the Netherlands, too.

The area around Lisse is covered in fields of tulips. They’re grown primarily for bulbs, and the aerial photographs are mildly surreal.

At the nearby Keukenhof park, more than 7 million tulip bulbs are planted every year, according to the Dutch tourism office. Tulip season begins in March and lasts until August, but the best time to see the blooms is April through the beginning of May.

Germany

Like its neighbor to the west, Germany also cultivates tulips for the bulbs. At Degenhardt-Sellmann Spezialkulturen in Schwaneberg, Germany, about 100 acres of tulips are grown.

A Dutch couple brought Holland to Italy this year when they opened a “pick your own” tulip farm outside Milan. The farm, created by Edwin Koeman and his girlfriend Nitsuje Wolanios, is about 2.5 acres with 183 varieties of tulips, the Associated Press reported. The tulip season in Italy is only two to three weeks.

Although the photos look similar, China’s tulip production pales in comparison with that of the Netherlands. But the Yunnan region is dominated by flora farming, according to the Economist, with fields growing from 329 in 1994 to 167,000 in 2013.

On Chaya Mountain in the Henan province, more than 10 varieties of tulips are grown.

British Columbia

After emigrating from the Netherlands, the Warmerdam family settled in Abbotsford, B.C., in 1950, and it brought its tulip game along. The family hosts an annual tulip festival. Last year’s festival was a success. The farm is waiting for warmer weather to coax out the blooms this year.

In the suburb of Haymarket, Va., west of Washington, tulips are grown by the thousands at Burnside Farms, where daily tickets can be bought for picking and selfie-taking.
