Premiere: Honey Lung - Sophomore

Premiere: Honey Lung - Sophomore Hotly-tipped post-grunge quartet Honey Lung are set to take off with the announcement of third single, 'Sophomore', and launch party at Camden Assembly. They’ve been packing out shows all over London with riffled-up alcohol-fuelled youths, leading to crowd surfer after crowd surfer and countless stage invasions, so it’s no surprise that Honey Lung are back with their third single, sounding bigger than ever before. Showcasing lo-fi fuzzy guitars with their refreshed '90s inspired grunge, Honey Lung have hit the nail on the head with Sophomore: an answer to all things rock ‘n’ roll. Lyrically bittersweet, “in a nutshell it’s a song about depending on your friends” explains songwriter Jamie Batten, “and the intricacies of relationships in general.” ‘Sophomore’ had its radio debut on BBC Radio 1 with Huw Stephens, followed shortly by plays from John Kennedy on Radio X Xposure and BBC Introducing in Devon. The track strikes a chord with artists such as Smashing Pumpkins and shoegaze influences from Ride, whilst honing in on nostalgic remedies of the pop-punk glory days of the early 2000s. Once you have listened to 'Sophomore' once you’ll be hooked as Honey Lung force their scuzzy sound to the barrels of your eardrums, where it will remain for eternity.

Some families may have spent Easter hunting for hidden chocolate eggs, but locals in South Australia's Riverland were on a search of a different kind — the hunt for the country's largest pumpkin.

Murray River Giant Pumpkin organiser Kevin Myers has been bringing new pumpkins into his family each year for nearly a decade.

"You seem to spend a lot of time with them," he said.

"They need a lot of water, a lot of fertiliser. They do like the sun in the morning but not in the afternoon so you need to put an umbrella over them in the afternoon and nurture them."

The seed of pumpkin growing was planted in Kevin Myers' head when a friend gave him some seeds as a present.

One year later, he founded the giant pumpkin competition as a new event for the annual Cadell Harvest Festival.

The competition is in its seventh year and includes prizes for ugliest pumpkin, best dressed pumpkin and the most prestigious award, heaviest pumpkin.

This year's winner weighed in at 101.4 kilograms.

Cooltong grower David Forbes said his winning pumpkin this year did not measure up to his last winner in 2013, which came in at a heavy 273kg.

Mr Meyers relates growing prize-winning pumpkins to bringing up a child.

"Germination is another big thing. I like to bring them up in little pots like babies before I put them out to grow," he said.

The festival has grown to incorporate food and market stalls, carp throwing competitions and a local celebrity pizza cook-off and is Australia's only giant pumpkin competition registered with the international body the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth.

Mid Murray Council Mayor Dave Burgess said it was brilliant for the community and a great fundraiser for the area.

"It's been a fantastic day to see so many people from the community out, some of the shack owners and tourists coming through enjoying such a fun day," he said.
