Liam Payne opens up about depression battle on the road with One Direction

Liam Payne opens up about depression battle on the road with One Direction Pop star Liam Payne has opened up about his battle with depression at the height of his success as a member of boy band One Direction. The singer tells The Sun there were nights he shouldn't have been onstage with his bandmates, and he was forever masking his secret mental health struggle when he met fans and posed for pictures. "I shouldn’t have been able to do as many shows as we did, if I’m honest about it, if I’m brutally honest about it," he tells the tabloid. "Going out and putting that happy smile on my face and singing the songs, honestly, sometimes it was like putting on one of those costumes, going out there and, underneath the costume, people don’t really see what’s going on." The 24-year-old admits his issues came to a head in October, 2015, when his bandmates were forced to scrap a show in Belfast, Northern Ireland, because Liam had been taken ill. In truth, Payne had just split from his girlfriend, Sophia Smith, and he was struggling to cope. "I let it get to me that day and I wasn’t in a good place," he adds. "Unfortunately I was going through a rough time and I let it get to me a little bit too much. That was it." Liam admits the group's decision to take a break from each other in late 2015 was a very healthy one - and gave himself and his bandmates a chance to truly appreciate what they had achieved.

But it looks as if Liam Payne may have won round Niall Horan after 'christening' him with his favourite gold bling. Niall, dressed in a Peaky Blinders inspired granddad top and flat cap combo grinned as Liam bestowed the chunky statement chain around his neck and posted the comical moment on Twitter on

Liam Payne believes One Direction will be "coming back around at some point".

The 'Bedroom Floor' hitmaker and his bandmates - Niall Horan, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson - decided to take a break to pursue their own projects a couple of years ago but Liam is "sure" they will reunite at some point when the time is right.

Asked if it has always been an aim of his to be a solo artist after he first entered 'The X Factor' as a solo artist, he said: "It's always been a dream. I wouldn't say it's always been an aim. Once One Direction started, it was just the passion. It was fantastic and it still is. It's coming back around at some point, I'm sure."

We've enjoyed the solo careers of the various members of the famous boyband, but there are countless fans who would love to see 1 D come back for at least one last album. Sadly, if Liam Payne 's latest announcements are anything to go by, that reunion may never actually happen.

Liam Payne would be the first to say he loved his days in One Direction, but his days in the biggest boy band in the world didn't come without its struggles, too. Now that Liam 's gone solo, he's ready to talk about the issues that came along with being in your fave band.

And Liam - who has seven-month-old son Bear with his partner Cheryl Tweedy - was thrilled to be performing at the MTV European Music Awards on the same stage as the likes of his childhood hero Eminem.

Speaking to ODE on the red carpet at the event at London's Wembley Arena, he added: "It's fantastic. I'm excited to be here. To be on the bill alongside Eminem, that's crazy.

"I never thought in my career that I would get to a stage where someone I used to listen to in my bedroom as a kid, I'm now sharing a stage with."

And Liam had previously revealed he thinks One Direction - which also included Zayn Malik until his departure in 2015 - "have to" reunite as they never got a chance to tour with their 2015 album 'Made In The AM'.

Liam said: "Yes, I think we will reunite at some point in the future. We have to - I mean we've got an album we haven't even toured yet, and I want to write some more songs as well with the boys.

"My favourite part about touring with the boys was when we were younger, we used to spend a lot of time together on the tour bus. When we did our first American tour, we had a really tiny, small bus, so it was just a lot of fun, just hanging out. And it was like, I don't know, that was the time when we got to know each other best."
