Geri Horner releasing tribute single to George Michael

Geri Horner releasing tribute single to George Michael Geri Horner is releasing her first solo single in 12 years as a tribute to her late friend George Michael. The former Spice Girl, also known as Geri Halliwell, was shocked by the death of her close friend George, who passed away on 25 December (16) at the age of 53. To honour her late pal, Geri is returning to her solo music career by releasing Angels In Chains on 23 June (17), two days before what would have been George's 54th birthday. She wrote the song, which references his hits Faith and Freedom, to deal with her grief and has been working on it secretly for six months with some of George's collaborators; backing singer Shirley Lewis and producer Chris Porter. "He had such an impact on my life," she told Britain's The Sun newspaper. "I didn't know what to do with all my feelings. When we have grief, you have to share it with each other. It was like a gift, it pushed me out the door." The 44-year-old revealed that she had discussed making a music comeback with the former Wham! frontman before his death. "It's not until I sit here with you and realise how, for the last 12 years I've been writing and writing and writing - and I think I was quite scared if I'm really honest I thought, you know, I'm not the hotpants girl, the young thing. That was an era and how am I going to come back? "So I kept on writing these songs, and I used to always play them to George and he'd say, 'Leave a bit of time - you can have an evolution.' " Geri, who will be donating all proceeds from the song to Childline, one of George's favourite charities, also revealed he had sent her Christmas presents and had been working on a documentary when he died. The singer gave birth to her son Montague a month after George's death and she paid tribute to her friend by giving her newborn the middle name George.

I was a George Michael fan from the beginning. That was first. And so I want to share that with other George Michael fans,” Geri Horner also said. The track is intended as a “beautiful, healing message” to anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one.

Geri Horner is going to premiere her George Michael tribute song on BBC Radio 2. ‘In the process I found how healing making this record had been not only for me but also for everyone involved.

Geri Horner found recording with George Michael’s band a “healing” experience.

The former Spice Girl, formally Geri Halliwell before her marriage to Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner, teamed up with several musicians who performed alongside the late musician to work on new song Angels in Chains.

It pays tribute to her former friend, who passed away on Christmas Day last year (25Dec16) from natural causes, and the recording session brought up a lot of feelings for Geri.

“Yes, it was very emotional. It made me realise that the power of each other, coming together, we can heal each other by just being open,” she told Billboard, noting backing singer Shirley Lewis was one of the artists involved.

MUMBAI: Former Spice Girls member Geri Horner will pay homage to late singer George Michael with her first global music release in 12 years. The singer says the track is intended as a "beautiful, healing message" to anyone who has experienced "the loss of a loved one".

“I'm in such admiration of her. She heard the demo and flew over to England, and she sang on it. She gave this amazing soul vibe - hearing her sing on this, it just blew me away. It was a very healing thing - they all cuddled each other when they saw each other.”

The single was released on Spotify on Monday morning (19Jun17) and all profits from the track will be donated to Childline, a confidential service that supports young people aged up to 18. George previously gave all the proceeds of his record Jesus to a Child to the organisation in 1996.

Discussing how her late pal will be remembered, especially during Pride Month (Jun17) celebrating the LGBTQ community, Geri explained, “I think we’ll look back at the great artist he was, the kind person he was. In the song that I wrote, right at the end of it, it goes, ‘Every young gun has their fun.’ And then it ends with (the) line, ‘Looking back the fun we had, it's freedom that he gave.’ So I think from his own mission of honesty to his humanness, you know, as a gay man I think he liberated others to free themselves.”
