Italian electric bike brand Energica has just unveiled its third model at CES in Las Vegas. It’s the Eva EsseEsse9 and it’s the first electric bike to get in on the retro motorcycle trend that’s been dominating the industry.

Its retro touches include a round headlight and a ribbed cafe racer-like seat while a streetfighter stance and angular bodywork make it stand out as a decidedly modern bike. Energica describes the Eva EsseEsse9 as a “brave, enthusiastic and heartful motorcycle.” We saw this bike at EICMA back in November, but this is our first look at the U.S. model.

Energica Eva EsseEsse9 to Make U.S. Debut at CES The retro motorcycle craze is spreading to electric bikes. Here’s what we know about the Energica Eva EsseEsse9: It’s a new version of the existing Eva streetfighter, this time with more old-school cafe racer-inspired style. It kind of looks like a mix of a Suzuki SV650 and a Ducati Scrambler, which is a good thing. The old-school motorcycle craze is in full swing for traditional gas-powered bikes with retro examples coming out of just about every major bike manufacturer, this new Energica is the first sign of the hot trend reaching the more niche electric bike market.

We don’t often associate electric motorcycles with old-school style, but that’s exactly what’s coming to CES 2018 in the form of the Energica Eva EsseEsse 9 , the Italian startup's third model. Although the new bike has already been unveiled at EICMA in Milan, Italy in November, this is its live U.S. debut

The new Energica Eva EsseEsse9 is similar to the existing Eva that it’s based on. It has a permanent magnet AC electric motor that makes 109 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque. The bike will have a governed top speed of 125 miles per hour. The motor is fed by a lithium polymer battery with an 11.7 kWh capacity. The battery charges from empty to 85 percent in 30 minutes with a fast charger or zero to 100 percent in 3.5 hours with standard charging.

The bike comes with four riding modes: Urban, Evo, Rain, and Sport. The rider gets a 4.3-inch TFT color screen with an integrated GPS receiver, Bluetooth, an ambient light sensor, and it can even show you the closest charging stations when connected to the MYEnergica app.

Brembo double floating disc front brakes and single disc rear brakes should give you plenty of stopping power if this torquey bike should get away from you. You also get Bosch switchable ABS standard which is a nice safety feature.

If you’re concerned about the reliability of an electric motorcycle, Energica provides a three-year warranty on the bike and a 50,000-kilometer (31,000-mile) warranty on the battery. The only thing we don’t know is pricing, which Energica told us in an email will be announced soon. The standard Eva starts at $23,400 so we can expect the Eva EsseEsse9 to be a little pricier than that.

It's available in three colors, Lunar White, Shocking Blue, and Metal Black. Between the stylish retro/modern look, the lively electric power plant, and the neat tech features, the Energica Eva EsseEsse9 looks like a promising bike and one of the most exciting production electric motorcycles we’ve seen so far.

Russell graduates to 2018 F2 seat with ART .
Mercedes Formula 1 junior and reigning GP3 champion George Russell will continue to drive for ART Grand Prix in 2018, graduating to Formula 2. Russell’s GP3 title was secured in his debut season in the series. The Englishman sealed the championship with two races to spare and helped ART to claim a seventh teams’ title in eight years. For his debut season in F2, Russell will partner fellow rookie and compatriot Jack Aitken, who also graduates from ART’s 2017 GP3 line-up. “I am very happy to be able to race in Formula 2 while continuing to drive for ART Grand Prix,” Russell stated. “We had a very successful year together last season and so it makes sense to continue working together and seek out new successes. “With the introduction of a new Formula 2 car, it will be challenging for all the teams to optimize the set-up from the start of the season, but I have every confidence in ART Grand Prix to get there and to be competitive as quickly as possible. “I cannot wait to take part in the first race and fight against some of the best drivers and teams at the pinnacle of junior motorsport.” Russell’s GP3 exploits were dovetailed with F1 duties last season. In conjunction with his role as a Mercedes junior driver, Russell competed in two FP1 sessions for Force India at the end of the season. He also ended 2017 with his first taste of F2 machinery, completing the post-season Abu Dhabi test with ART.
