  Honda to supply 2017-spec engine if new model is unreliable Honda says next year it may use the 2017-spec engine if its 2018 engine is unreliable or doesn’t give the performance that its hoping it will. Outgoing Honda Formula 1 project leader Yusuke Hasegawa told Autosport that should Honda’s 2018 engine fail in the same way all of its predecessors have, the company plan to keep its 2017 engine as a backup plan. Honda’s new engine partners, Toro Rosso, will hope this is good news for them as whilst Honda’s engine was slow, McLaren, Honda’s previous partner, only had two DNFs in the last six races on the 2017 season. Toro Rosso will hope that Honda’s 2018 engine will be much quicker and hope to reap the rewards of being Honda’s sole partner team next season. The first 1.6-litre V6 hybrid produced by Honda in 2015 was woefully unreliable and this has been a constant theme throughout Honda’s F1 return. McLaren has struggled greatly during the three year partnership having only managed two ninth-place finishes and one-sixth place in the constructors’ championship. Hasegawa told Autosport “I’m sure we can start the season well next year,” he said “We modified the engine concept from last year to this year. There’s no doubt it was a necessary update for us. We are thinking it was the right direction.” Hasegawa also talked more about Honda sourcing help from outside to benefit their F1 project. “We started many collaborations with other partners, the identity of which we don’t normally disclose, We can see results from that project.

Rather than standalone devices that work independently, Honda envisions a future in which multiple robotics devices work together as a system to make human life better. That's why its four new robotics demonstrations unveiled on Tuesday at CES 2018 in Las Vegas are united under one banner: 3E Concept. 

3E stands for Empower, Experience and Empathy, which the Japanese automaker sees as the three ways robotics can enhance our daily lives. 

Empower

The 3E-D18 is an autonomous off-road workhorse device based on Honda's ATV chassis but with a customizable rail system in place of a seat or handlebars. The D18 makes use of AI to get around, while serving a broad range of work activities. Its four-wheel-drive electric powertrain, short ATV wheelbase and virtually indestructible airless tires should help it to climb obstacles and get to hard-to-reach places.

The rail system can accommodate a variety of equipment chosen to fit the job and the GPS and sensor-based AI allows the D18 to guide itself through the environment.

On a smaller scale, the 3E-B18 -- yeah, they're all named very similarly -- is a sort of a robotic wheelchair for use in- or outdoors, aimed at empowering the disabled or elderly. Unlike a wheelchair, the B18 can maintain an upright, level seat even when driven up or downhill. Its small footprint allows it to turn in a tight radius and access narrow pedestrian areas. With additional attachments, the 3E-B18 can transform from a seated mobility scooter to a motorized luggage cart or a stroller.

Empathy

Honda's 3E-A18 is an empathetic robotic device designed to explore the emotional connection between machines and humans. The 3E-A18 has a face that can show emotions and can recognize and respond to the emotions of a person interacting with it. Sitting atop an omnidirectional driving wheel, the A18 has a rounded, egg-like shape with a soft exterior skin that "invites people to touch or hug the robot," in Honda's words.

Experience

The A18 was designed to be cute, but I think the most adorable of the four Honda robotics concepts is the 3E-C18. This little bot looks like a boxy R2-D2, but with a face that reminds me of the most recent Honda electric car concepts.

  Honda junior Fukuzumi graduates to dual F2/Super Formula programme Honda young driver Nirei Fukuzumi will graduate from GP3 to a dual programme with Formula 2 and Super Formula drives in 2018. The 20-year-old Japanese driver moves up to the next level on the ladder to Formula 1 after a third-place finish in GP3 last year, taking two race wins in the process. He will race for Arden International in F2 this season, a move widely expected after he drove for the British outfit at the post-season test in Abu Dhabi. A more surprising move for Fukuzumi is his graduation to Super Formula. He will race for Team Mugen next year, replacing current Toro Rosso F1 driver Pierre Gasly. Super Formula has established itself as a highly credible step on the way to F1 after GP2 champions Stoffel Vandoorne and Gasly raced in the series in 2016 and ’17 respectively as they were not permitted to return to GP2 as champions and were unable to immediately find race seats in F1. Gasly nearly won the Super Formula title in 2017, finishing half a point away from series veteran Hiroaki Ishiura. Notably, two of the Super Formula races clash with F2 weekends. It is yet unconfirmed as to which series Fukuzumi will prioritise.

The C18's purpose is broad. It can carry things and has a deployable canopy that reveals a flat surface, which makes it sort of like a mobile workspace for entrepreneurs, craft folk or artists. But it also has an AI that can observe people, learn about them and operate autonomously. Add-ons allow the C18 to be customized for both personal and commercial use.

At this point, it's OK if these robotics concepts are a bit vague in their purpose. Honda is still figuring out how we'll use and interact with robots in the future.

Eagle revolves around a pair of newly unveiled 0.49-inch OLED screens that may be limited to 720p, but pump out a high 1,000 nits of brightness while consuming relatively little power. This doesn't appear to be a convertible design like Avegant's Glyph, though, so it won't do as much good if you only want to listen to music.
