Brawn open to giving new engine manufacturers 'rule break'

Brawn open to giving new engine manufacturers 'rule break' Ross Brawn has given off the suggestion new engine manufacturers could be given a possible rule break if they enter the sport in the new engine formula beyond 2020. After Honda’s poor form since they re-entered the sport in 2015, the Japanese company has yet to find a step forward with their program to be able to challenge the other leading manufacturers. Recently the FIA stated they believed the Mercedes, Ferrari and Renault power units were all within 0.3s of each other. Red Bull’s Christian Horner did refute this possibility and felt it could be as much as 0.8s. “Under the new [post-2020] regulations, we’ll have to give consideration to new manufacturers who join after the start date, and acknowledge they might need additional support initially,” Brawn told Autosport. “If you recall the token system, perhaps a new entrant might get more development tokens for the first couple of years – there are some smart initiatives you can use to encourage people into F1.” Brawn has also said he feels engines should be the performance differentiator within Formula 1 but feels the current regulations have prevented any new manufacturers from taking up the task of building such a unit. “The old [Cosworth V8-dominated] days, where the engine was in effect just a spacer between the chassis and the gearbox because everybody had the same engine – I don’t think that added a lot of value to F1, whereas there is value to having some differentiation,” Brawn added.

Renault hoping to match Mercedes engine by 2018

Renault hoping to match Mercedes engine by 2018 Renault is hoping to level Mercedes’ engine by the 2018 Formula 1 season, after gradually reducing the deficit over the last few years created by the dawn of the new hybrid engines in 2014. Mercedes has consistently produced the most reliable and efficient engine since 2014, while Renault has been playing catch-up since the new rules were introduced. Following Renault’s decision to return to the sport as a fully-fledged manufacturer in 2016, greater resources have been placed on improving the engine to the standard of the Mercedes. Renault F1 engine chief Remi Taffin admitted to Autosport that the French manufacturer made a mistake in 2014 with the direction of their engine. “It has been clear the target we have set within Renault, that 2018 was the year that we needed to be at the level of the benchmark, which is still Mercedes,” Taffin said. “We have done some part of the job this year and we will have to achieve the rest through the winter. “We have got engines on the dyno and we can clearly see that there is some progress, and we know there can be 0.3-0.5s [deficit right now] depending on the track. “So if Mercedes is still getting one or two tenths over next winter, we have got what we need to close the gap. “Whether we will be in front by the end of next year we will see, but it is feasible. We’ve got what we need to do now. “We are making more progress than them, but we had to rethink what we produced for 2014.

We first heard about the possibility of a hot Renault Zoe RS in April and now, the French company has provided additional information about the potential future of the model. Speaking to Autocar, Renault Sport boss Patrice Ratti confirmed that a punchy prototype of the firm's all-electric supermini has

“We are thinking about doing a Zoe RS but it is a big study that will take time,” said Ratti. “The performance of batteries has improved [to the point] that it is now feasible, which certainly wasn’t the case a few years ago. So the studies have begun.”

Renault Sport Clio chassis and steering modifications are said to fit the Zoe, although Ratti said “a Renault Sport car also needs to handle well and that is the challenge. To have the weight of the batteries and still achieve the agility we pride ourselves on is a tough task.” He added that battery limitations meant the prototype could only be driven for 15 minutes flat out.

“Renault has established leadership in electric vehicles and we plan to maintain and develop that,” added Ratti. “The incredible acceleration of electric cars – that fits perfectly to Renault Sport.”

If a positive decision is made, the hot electric car will be presented before 2020 , British Autocar reports. A few years ago thinking about the hot electric car was pointless, added the RS Head. Renault has apparently begun studies into whether a hot electric Zoe could be technically good enough and commercially viable, with a potential view to developing a production version by 2020 . “We are thinking about doing a Zoe RS but it is a big study that will take time.
