But, while few of us board a flight expecting to have the best meal of our lives, it turns out you can influence how tasty your in-flight dinner is – by making the best possible selection...

And it's all a question of considering how hot food is prepared on a plane.

If you stop to think about it, there are obvious limitations in that the cabin crew are working within the confines of the cabin.

So, you're always better off opting for meals that maintain their flavour well when they're re-heated.

Why You Should Always Turn on the Air Vent Above You During a Flight

Ordering food on a plane can always be risky thanks to the limited culinary capabilities in a plane cabin. Ordering fried rice or stew could be a way around this problem. There is also always a big safety risk with plane food, meaning that foods like steak should never be prepared medium rare.

'We can simmer it and reheat it over and over and it will still be a stew,' he told CNN Travel.

Other meals that are likely to stay tasty? Fried rice and anything containing fatty fish, apparently, as they tend to retain moisture well.

Meanwhile, you should avoid foods that are likely to dry out or taste overcooked easily, including pasta dishes.

This is particularly important because food can often end up being re-heated for a bit longer than intended, suggests Gross.

'The cabin crew may turn on the ovens, then turbulence happens,' he explained. 'You can imagine what happens to the food.'
